Principal Software Engineer - OCI

Oracle•Nashville, TN

About The Position

The Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) team builds and manages integrated cloud services in a broadly distributed, multi-tenant cloud environment. This role is part of the Virtual Networking Control Plane organization, which owns and manages networking resources in virtual and functional layers for internal OCI and external customers using virtual networking APIs and workflows. The Virtual Networking team delivers Network-as-a-Service for planning, provisioning, lifecycle management, and security of customer network infrastructure, combining the flexibility and simplicity of virtual networks with the manageability and control of software-defined networking. The Principal Software Engineer leads development and implementation of scalable, reliable, secure, and highly available distributed systems. The role includes system architecture and design, operational readiness and incident response, performance monitoring, compliance, and automation of cloud infrastructure and change management.

Responsibilities

  • Lead development and implementation of scalable distributed-system components, and begin architecting components that support horizontal and vertical scaling.
  • Optimize code and systems for large-scale data processing and high-throughput requirements.
  • Define scalability requirements for owned components and ensure design and implementation requirements are met, including elasticity to scale up and down.
  • Use data plane platforms to handle large-scale data retrieval, storage, and processing, and design performance and load testing.
  • Design fault-tolerant components and systems, including redundancy, replication, and automatic failover, to withstand in-service updates.
  • Design systems to handle service disruptions and network partitions, and implement approaches such as load shedding, throttling, and rate limiting.
  • Design durable components and systems that adhere to service level objectives, including availability and durability expectations.
  • Define key performance indicators and telemetry, and build and customize dashboards, telemetry systems, and alerting to monitor system health.
  • Design and implement functional and correctness requirements for features and systems.
  • Design complex test scenarios, including fault-injection and brown-out testing, and implement data replication and synchronization to maintain data integrity and availability.
  • Diagnose, debug, and resolve issues in active components and systems; mentor others in these processes.
  • Implement strategies to prevent interruptions and avoid customer maintenance windows when resolving issues.
  • Maintain expertise in owned components and systems, meet operational readiness expectations, and serve in operational support rotations, guiding incident response and root-cause investigations.
  • Implement security measures for multi-tenant environments, including encryption and access controls, and execute plans to remediate security gaps.
  • Help ensure cloud infrastructure complies with industry standards and regulations and that documentation remains up to date.
  • Develop and maintain automation scripts and tools, such as Infrastructure as Code, to manage cloud infrastructure.
  • Create and follow change-management plans for patching, updates, and rollbacks, and begin designing systems and components to automate these processes.
