Principal Software Engineer, Frontend

North•New York, NY
•$250,000 - $320,000•Hybrid

About The Position

North’s frontend helps customers understand and act on cloud, AI, and data spending through dashboards, allocation, commitment recommendations, and Noros, its AI agent, across the app and Slack. As North’s first Principal Software Engineer focused on frontend, this person will set the direction for how the product looks, feels, and works while building alongside the teams that ship it. The role partners closely with the Product Designer and Experience team on the design system and frontend frameworks used across the company. Its aim is to make consistent, fast, well-tested frontend development easy for North engineers, while making inconsistent or poorly tested changes harder to ship. The position is hybrid in New York City or remote in the US.

Requirements

  • At least 10 years of experience building production web applications, with deep expertise in modern frontend architecture.
  • A track record of setting frontend direction across multiple teams, not just one codebase.
  • Experience building and scaling a design system with designers, from components through adoption, and treating it as a product for its engineering users.
  • Strong judgment about performance, state management, and data-heavy interfaces such as charts, tables, and filters.
  • Continues to write substantial amounts of code and leads by shipping with teams rather than handing down standards.
  • Clear writing and communication skills, including the ability to explain tradeoffs to people outside engineering.
  • Pragmatic, informed use of AI coding tools and sound judgment about when they are useful.
  • Low ego and a habit of bringing people along.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with financial, analytics, or data visualization products.
  • Experience building conversational or AI-driven interfaces.
  • Familiarity with FinOps or cloud billing concepts.
  • Experience at a growing startup where the frontend outgrew its first architecture.

Responsibilities

  • Set the technical direction for North’s frontend architecture and document the direction and rationale.
  • Build and evolve the design system and component library with the Product Designer, and roll it out across the app.
  • Improve performance, accessibility, and interaction quality throughout the product.
  • Establish frontend patterns, testing practices, and review standards, and incorporate them into the tools engineers and coding agents use.
  • Turn recurring frontend questions, review comments, and inconsistencies into design system and framework improvements that also reach existing screens.
  • Partner with product teams on new features so they serve customers well and fit the system.
  • Help shape how Noros appears as a consistent part of the app experience.
  • Coach engineers through code review, design review, and pairing.

Benefits

  • Unlimited PTO.
  • 16 weeks of paid parental leave; birthing parents receive an additional 4 weeks at 50% pay.
  • Two company-wide breaks per year: one around Labor Day and one at the end of the year.
  • Aetna Medical PPO plan with the majority of the premium covered by North.
  • Dental and vision insurance.
  • Flexible spending account (FSA) for health expenses and commuter benefits.
  • 30-day sabbatical every 4 years.
  • Equity included.
