About The Position

The Principal, Software Engineer leads the design and delivery of scalable platform capabilities, including cloud-native architectures and AI/ML frameworks, to support Walmart’s evolving technology landscape. This role drives full lifecycle software development across multiple teams, ensuring high availability, reliability, and performance. The position requires strategic technical leadership, mentorship, and collaboration with cross-functional stakeholders to translate business needs into effective solutions. The Principal Engineer champions innovation, continuous improvement, and architectural excellence while maintaining alignment with long-term platform goals and operational standards. The Personalization team specializes in big data, machine learning, application engineering, and product strategy to develop advanced technology solutions enhancing e-commerce. They design intelligent systems that deliver tailored customer experiences throughout the shopping journey. The team builds scalable platforms supporting machine learning feature generation, model inferencing, governance, privacy, and analytics. Collaborating closely with data scientists, they apply cutting-edge methods in machine learning, deep learning, reinforcement learning, and natural language processing to address evolving customer needs and drive innovation at scale.

Requirements

  • Experience in architecting large-scale distributed systems and platforms that supports modern applied ML at scale.
  • Advanced knowledge of complex software design, distributed system design, and application building experience using Java or Scala, and Python.
  • Experience in building and scaling systems that orchestrate and execute complex workflows in big data leveraging Apache Spark, Apache Kafka , and BigData stack preferably in Google Cloud Platform.
  • Experience with designing and building Feature Store solutions.
  • Experience with ML Platform and ML Ops methodologies.
  • Experience in relational SQL and NoSQL databases like Cassandra, AzureSQL, Cosmos.
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or related area and 5 years’ experience in software engineering or related area.
  • 7 years’ experience in software engineering or related area.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or related area and 3 years' experience in software engineering or related area.
  • Background in creating inclusive digital experiences, demonstrating knowledge in implementing Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 AA standards, assistive technologies, and integrating digital accessibility seamlessly.

Responsibilities

  • Build data-driven platforms and capabilities to power Personalization experiences across channels.
  • Architect solutions which could be deployed as SaaS platform, ensuring modular design to support multi-tenancy from it’s core.
  • Architect intelligent software systems integrating AI agents and advanced machine learning technologies.
  • Architect systems and platforms that will orchestrate technology roadmap for cross-functional teams to meet enterprise goals.
  • Architect systems and workflows to process and manage petabyte scales of features data.
  • Collaborating with Science and Engineering team leads and architects to drive end-to-end scalable solutions for cross-functional projects.
  • Actively contribute to the research community through participation at conferences, seminars, and workshops.
