Principal Software Architect – AI-Enabled Silicon Development

Advanced Micro Devices, Inc•Boxborough, MA

About The Position

AMD is seeking a Principal Software Architect to define and drive the architecture of complex, production-grade software systems that support silicon development and accelerate AI deployment. The role is suited to a hands-on technical leader with industry experience taking software products from concept through deployment, scaling, adoption, and sustained customer support. The architect will combine software architecture expertise with practical knowledge of modern AI technologies to identify opportunities in engineering workflows, improve productivity and efficiency, reduce development cycle time, and strengthen time-to-market. Solutions should be secure, reliable, maintainable, measurable, and easy to adopt. The role works across AMD teams and requires effective communication with engineering teams, senior leaders, and non-specialist stakeholders. Success means establishing a coherent, scalable architecture that helps teams deliver faster with less duplication and operational risk; putting AI-enabled capabilities into production with measurable improvements; supporting adoption and customer confidence through reliable products, intuitive experiences, documentation, and support; and fostering disciplined, collaborative engineering practices and continuous learning.

Requirements

  • Extensive industry experience architecting, building, deploying, and supporting complex software systems or commercial-grade products.
  • Demonstrated success designing scalable, reliable, secure, and maintainable distributed systems, platforms, services, or developer tools.
  • Strong software engineering foundation, including architecture patterns, APIs, data models, integration strategies, testing, CI/CD, observability, and production operations.
  • Practical experience applying modern AI technologies to real-world products or engineering workflows, including understanding model integration, evaluation, data quality, guardrails, and operational considerations.
  • Ability to communicate architecture, trade-offs, risks, and recommendations clearly to engineering teams, senior leaders, and non-specialist stakeholders.
  • Track record of leading technically across organizational boundaries and delivering results in ambiguous, fast-moving environments.
  • Bachelor’s or advanced degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience, is preferred.
  • This role is not eligible for visa sponsorship.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with semiconductors, electronic design automation, hardware/software co-design, silicon design, verification, validation, or adjacent engineering domains.
  • Experience developing AI-enabled developer tools, engineering automation, knowledge systems, or enterprise AI platforms.
  • Bachelor’s or advanced degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience (preferred).

Responsibilities

  • Define the end-to-end architecture, technical strategy, and evolution roadmap for software platforms and products used in silicon design, verification, validation, and AI-enabled engineering workflows.
  • Translate business, engineering, and customer needs into scalable system designs, clear interfaces, reusable services, and actionable implementation plans.
  • Provide technical leadership throughout the product lifecycle, from requirements and design through implementation, integration, validation, deployment, observability, support, and continuous improvement.
  • Evaluate and apply modern AI technologies—including generative AI, large language models, intelligent agents, retrieval-augmented systems, and machine-learning platforms—to improve productivity, efficiency, quality, and time-to-market.
  • Establish architectural standards and engineering practices for performance, reliability, security, maintainability, extensibility, and operational readiness.
  • Partner with silicon engineering, software development, infrastructure, data, security, product management, and customer-facing teams to deliver integrated solutions.
  • Improve user and customer experience through intuitive workflows, high-quality documentation, responsive support models, structured feedback mechanisms, and data-driven product improvements.
  • Guide technical trade-offs, architecture and design reviews, prototyping, and risk management across teams and complex dependencies.
  • Mentor engineers and technical leads, raise software engineering standards, and influence stakeholders without relying on direct authority.
  • Assess emerging technologies and external solutions, distinguish practical value from experimentation, and create disciplined paths from proof of concept to production.
  • Work directly with users or customers to diagnose complex issues, convert feedback into product improvements, and build trust through responsive technical support.
