About The Position

Hitachi Energy is seeking a Principal Site Reliability Engineer to ensure the secure, reliable, and efficient operation of cloud-hosted environments supporting ESS software products and customer deployments. Within Cloud Operations, the SRE competency helps ensure SaaS products are reliable, scalable, secure, and cost-efficient across AWS and Azure. The role combines software engineering and operations to improve service reliability and operational excellence through critical incident response, proactive problem management, error budgets, and toil reduction. The role promotes operational excellence through consistent cloud operations processes, continuous improvement, and cross-functional collaboration with Product Development (R&D), Architecture, Customer Experience (CX), Quality, Security, and other cloud, infrastructure, and platform teams. It leads Cloud Maturity Assessments across products and cloud platforms, identifies deployment, security, and operational-readiness gaps, and works with partner teams to incorporate remediation into roadmaps and releases.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field.
  • At least 10 years of experience in Cloud Operations, Site Reliability Engineering, or Infrastructure Administration.
  • Experience in Site Reliability Engineering, Production Operations, Platform Engineering, or DevOps supporting SaaS systems.
  • Hands-on experience with Azure and/or AWS production workloads, including networking, IAM, monitoring, logging, scaling, and disaster recovery/backup patterns.
  • Strong grounding in observability (metrics, logs, and traces), alerting strategy, and incident response operations.
  • Ability to translate product operational gaps into a prioritized backlog and drive improvements through partner teams.
  • Understanding of cloud-native architectures, distributed systems, and virtualized environments.
  • Proficiency with scripting or automation languages such as Python, Bash, Ansible, or PowerShell.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams.
  • Ability to work with global teams across time zones.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience conducting structured operational-readiness reviews, such as FTR/WAFR-like reviews, and driving follow-through on outcomes.
  • Experience with CloudWatch and/or Azure Monitor/Log Analytics, including building operational dashboards and alarms.
  • Experience implementing SRE practices such as SLOs, error budgets, and toil reduction in a production environment.
  • Understanding of cybersecurity practices, cloud compliance frameworks, and vulnerability management.

Responsibilities

  • Lead Cloud Maturity Assessments across products deployed on AWS and Azure, using standardized scoring templates, weighted maturity dimensions, and executive reporting such as heatmaps and dashboards to identify gaps and create actionable improvement backlogs.
  • Define and implement reliability standards for observability, establish service health practices, and drive consistent operational practices across products and platforms to support scalable operations and consistent SLAs.
  • Facilitate cloud-provider and internal operational-readiness reviews, including FTR/WAFR-style reviews, and coordinate follow-up day-two operational improvements.
  • Implement SRE practices, including SLIs/SLOs, error budgets, capacity planning, load and performance considerations, and automation to reduce operational toil.
  • Lead post-incident reviews and reliability improvements that measurably improve uptime, resilience, and operational consistency.
  • Partner with Product Development (R&D), DevOps, the Program Management Office (PMO), SecOps, Quality, Security, Customer Experience, and other engineering and platform teams to drive remediation and reliable product delivery.
