Principal Scientist I - Pharmacology

AbbVie•North Chicago, IL
•$124,500 - $236,500

About The Position

AbbVie is seeking a highly motivated and experienced scientist to join its Quantitative, Translation & ADME Sciences (QTAS) team in North Chicago. The role focuses on drug-metabolizing enzyme function, drug-drug interaction concepts, quantitative bioanalysis, and scientific leadership. The scientist will help implement innovative quantitative approaches to advance translational ADME using conventional and complex in vitro models. Working in both laboratory and non-laboratory settings, the position includes conducting and providing scientific leadership for in vitro assays and applying translational modeling concepts to support AbbVie's global in vitro ADME strategy. The scientist will implement and evaluate technologies and approaches that improve mechanistic and translational understanding of early- and late-stage small molecules, facilitating rapid advancement of drug candidates. The role also offers opportunities to contribute to broader DMPK areas based on the scientist's experience and expertise. Experience in adjacent areas such as drug permeability and transport, receptor pharmacology, or pharmacokinetic modeling is desirable.

Requirements

  • PhD in Biological Sciences, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Chemistry, or a related field, with more than 10 years of relevant ADME pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry experience; or a bachelor's or master's degree with more than 15 years of experience with in vitro ADME experiments and DMPK projects through academic or industry work.
  • Deep understanding of drug metabolism and ADME principles, including enzyme kinetics, IVIVE, and drug-drug interaction risk assessment.
  • Strong, relevant publication record and a track record of strategic scientific leadership in the in vitro ADME field.
  • Highly motivated, self-driven, and results-oriented, with excellent communication and presentation skills and the ability to work both as a team member and as an independent scientific contributor.
  • Passion for generating ideas, learning, solving technical problems, and applying new technologies to further scientific goals.
  • Ability to build strong relationships with peers and cross-functional partners outside the team.
  • Ability to inspire and lead others in areas of expertise.
  • Learns quickly, grasps the essence, and can change course quickly where indicated.
  • Raises the bar and is never satisfied with the status quo.
  • Creates a learning environment that is open to suggestions and experimentation for improvement.
  • Embraces others' ideas, nurtures innovation, and manages innovation through to reality.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in drug permeability and transport, receptor pharmacology, or pharmacokinetic modeling.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate novel in vitro tools and methods, and apply established methods and concepts to enable and improve prediction of human pharmacokinetics and drug-drug interaction potential.
  • Lead, mentor, and coach junior staff in established and novel practices in in vitro drug metabolism.
  • Collaborate with QTAS and discovery biology, pharmacology, and chemistry scientists to generate data and knowledge supporting translational and mechanistic models.
  • Communicate internally and externally on topics related to in vitro drug metabolism.
  • Keep up to date with emerging literature and science in modeling and in vitro approaches.
  • Externalize research through full-length publications and oral presentations.
  • Conduct and provide scientific leadership for in vitro assays and apply translational modeling concepts to support AbbVie's global in vitro ADME strategy.
  • Implement and/or evaluate new technologies and approaches to support mechanistic and translational understanding of early- and late-stage small molecules.

Benefits

  • Paid time off, including vacation, holidays, and sick time.
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance for eligible employees.
  • 401(k) for eligible employees.
