About The Position

STR’s Systems Development Division is seeking a Principal Radar Systems Engineer to support and lead the architecting, design, development, and implementation of radar systems that address challenging customer needs. The role involves collaborating with multidisciplinary research and engineering teams to understand customer objectives and develop innovative solutions, including exploration and demonstration of Radar and EW/RF convergence. The engineer applies a broad understanding of complete radar systems, contributes hands-on to implementation, and guides teams across software, hardware, integration, and test. The role may include directing development efforts and leading junior engineers. The position spans the systems engineering lifecycle, from interpreting mission needs and developing system concepts through implementation, integration, testing, and operational support. The engineer will develop advanced radar solutions, perform performance analysis using simulations and real-world testing, and communicate technical solutions to program teams, STR management, and customers. Familiarity with Digital Engineering and Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) is expected. The position requires an active Secret security clearance and the ability to obtain a Top Secret clearance with eligibility to support special access programs. U.S. citizenship is required by the U.S. Government. STR is a defense, intelligence, and national security technology company with locations near Boston, Arlington, Dayton, Melbourne, Carlsbad, Atlanta, and Denver. The company describes a collaborative learning environment that recognizes team members’ contributions and achievements.

  • Expert understanding of and experience with entire radar systems and their principles of design, development, requirements verification, test planning, test execution, data analysis, and operations support.
  • In-depth knowledge of implementing radar modes, including transmit and receive waveform generation and signal processing.
  • Proficiency in radar simulation tools and MATLAB.
  • Experience preparing and delivering high-level briefings to customers and senior management, and translating mission needs into end-to-end solutions with decision-makers and customers.
  • Familiarity with technical reviews such as SRRs, PDRs, CDRs, and TIMs.
  • Demonstrated experience leading and delivering advanced development projects.
  • At least 10 years of work experience as a Radar Systems Engineer.
  • A bachelor’s degree and at least 10 years of applicable experience directly related to radar-system development and deployment; or a master’s degree and at least 8 years of applicable experience; or a PhD and at least 5 years of applicable experience. Equivalent experience will be considered.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, technical, and peer-leadership skills; self-motivation, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate effectively with management and individual contributors.

Nice To Haves

  • At least 5 years of experience working with SysML models in Cameo or a similar tool.
  • Experience working with software-intensive systems and open architecture.
  • Familiarity with programming languages such as C, C++, and Python.
  • Familiarity with Digital Engineering and MBSE.

Responsibilities

  • Research, understand, and lead new RF sensing implementations for advanced radar solutions; identify technical approaches and work with program and technical leadership to implement them.
  • Decompose customer needs and complex problems and develop system concepts and solutions.
  • Use tools to create, evaluate, and document solutions and communicate them to the team, STR management, and customers, including generating system models in Cameo where applicable.
  • Design, direct, and when necessary implement technology in multifunction radar systems.
  • Conduct performance analysis through simulations and real-world testing to validate and optimize radar performance.
  • Apply an appropriate level of rigor to ensure systems meet customer needs.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define radar system requirements, specifications, and architectures and ensure system integration and interoperability.
  • Develop and specify simulation tools to support testing and verification of radar software and hardware components.
  • Lead or direct development efforts and junior engineers as needed.
  • Prepare and deliver high-level briefings to customers and senior management; interact with decision-makers and customers to translate mission needs into end-to-end solutions.
