About The Position

Collins Aerospace – Fire Protection is looking to hire a Principal Project Engineer to join our electrical engineering (EE) design group to support electronics project management. The fire protection electronics product line is vast, and the EE team is responsible for engineering activity at all lifecycle stages, including new technology development, new product introduction, supporting operations and fielded products, and obsolescence mitigation. The project engineer will work closely with the EE team manager and the program chief to lead electronics design projects and coordinate execution of daily work to meet the needs of various stakeholders.

Requirements

  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and minimum 8 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field
  • Demonstrates organizational skills, successful team work, and developing leadership qualities.
  • Experience with detailed project execution planning and management, progress assessment, and mitigation execution for engineering development programs.
  • Demonstrates communication skills with internal or external customers, is effective at conveying status, metrics, issues, concerns, and successes to team and to management.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of RTX projects and process with the ability to make enhancements and leverage in daily work.
  • Experience in coordinating bids for engineering development programs, including WBS task generation, scope identification, budget and schedule estimating, risk identification, and dependency identification.
  • Demonstrates leadership skills and an ability/desire to work in a team environment, establish working relationships with peers and co-workers, and effectively serve as the primary engineering representative for the program.
  • Familiarity with Scrum / Agile project management.

Responsibilities

  • Perform the role of scrum master for the electrical engineering team (run daily scrums, stakeholder reviews, and retrospectives; work with manager to define priorities and plan sprints, manage story refinement, and encourage continuous improvement).
  • Direct all phases of owned programs from program kickoff through completion.
  • Work with the Program Manager, Program Chief, and Design Engineering Manager to create and maintain estimates of schedule, budget and staffing while ensuring the project remains on schedule, within budget, and in compliance with customer needs and internal processes and procedures.
  • Understand risks and cost variances and assist in the development of mitigation plans.
  • Participate in and coordinate peer review of engineering documentation and design reviews.
  • Communicate with internal and external customers: report program status, key performance metrics, and program issues and concerns.
  • Report overall engineering performance, including areas of Earned Value Management (EVM) and Risk Management.
  • Analyze data and determine appropriate actions to correct real problems before they impact overall program.
  • Ensure adherence to development processes throughout project execution with guidance from discipline chief.
  • Work with the military and commercial customers in a professional manner.
  • Multi-task and maintain flexibility in response to changing program needs.
