Principal Mechanical Engineer (Structural Design and Analysis)

Epirus•Torrance, CA
•$138,000 - $193,000

About The Position

Epirus is a high-growth technology company focused on addressing national security challenges. Its flagship product, Leonidas, is a software-defined system that uses intelligent power management techniques. The Principal Mechanical Engineer will innovate on the next generation of high-power microwave (HPM) products, working with an engineering team to design and analyze electronic and mechanical assemblies for operation in harsh environments. The role follows designs and analyses through their lifecycle, from conceptualization through testing and verification. The position includes designing and analyzing structures that mount RF phased arrays and electronic packages; performing finite element analysis and hand calculations; and supporting product teams as a mechanical design and analysis lead. The role also collaborates across functions to develop requirements and build electromechanical systems that withstand operating and transportation environments. Candidates must meet the stated ITAR eligibility requirements. For California, the starting pay range is $138,000–$193,000 USD. Actual compensation depends on factors including skills, experience, and office location.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, Structural, or a similar engineering field.
  • 8+ years of experience in structural/stress design and analysis of metallic structures.
  • Expert-level comfort with finite element analysis and structural hand calculations.
  • Experience with structural analysis and pre/post-processing software such as Nastran, FEMAP, Ansys, Patran, or equivalent.
  • Experience analyzing systems under static loading, shock, and vibration, including random vibration.
  • Experience with CAD and practical application of GD&T.
  • Experience with structural testing and qualification of mechanical systems.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State, to meet ITAR requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience performing stress analysis of electronic systems such as circuit card assemblies.
  • Experience designing or analyzing actuated mechanical systems, including azimuth and elevation pointing mechanisms.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Collaborative approach and ability to work across all levels of the organization.
  • Organized and comfortable working in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment.
  • Familiarity with MIL-STD-810 and associated harsh-environment considerations.

Responsibilities

  • Design and analyze structures for mounting RF phased arrays and other electronic packages.
  • Perform structural finite element analysis (FEA) on complex mechanical structures and electronic assemblies across solution and load types, including static, modal, and structural dynamics (vibration and shock).
  • Build finite element models and perform hand calculations to verify structural integrity across Epirus product lines.
  • Provide mentoring and serve as the mechanical design and analysis lead on product design teams.
  • Collaborate with a cross-functional team to develop requirements, design, and build electromechanical systems that survive harsh operating and transportation environments.
