Principal Mechanical Engineer - Thermal Engineer

RTX•Tucson, AZ
•$118,300 - $224,900•Onsite

About The Position

The Mechanical Analysis and Test (MA&T) Department ensures structural and thermal design robustness across Raytheon products. It provides structural and thermal engineering solutions throughout product development and support, using methods ranging from classical and empirical techniques to finite element analysis, validated through testing. Raytheon is seeking an experienced Principal Thermal Engineer to perform detailed thermal analyses throughout product lifecycles, from design trade studies and proposals through qualification testing and production support. The work involves difficult thermal problems requiring imaginative, thorough, practical solutions consistent with organizational objectives, using both classical hand analysis and finite element analysis software. The engineer is expected to apply thermodynamic principles, complete work within agreed cost and schedule, participate in and conduct peer reviews, plan and support tests, reduce test data, and correlate thermal models. The role may also involve technical leadership, development of departmental processes and tools, and leading analysis or test teams.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) and at least 8 years of relevant experience; a related master’s degree may substitute for 2 years of experience, or a related Ph.D. may substitute for 5 years.
  • Experience in thermal analysis using FloTHERM, PATRAN, Thermal Desktop/SINDA, ANSYS, or equivalent tools.
  • Experience applying mechanical principles to classical thermal analysis solutions both inside and outside finite element tools.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.
  • Demonstrated thermal testing experience, including planning, organization, execution, data reduction, and correlation.
  • Demonstrated experience leading a team of thermal analysts on major program efforts.
  • Ability to obtain a U.S. government-issued security clearance; U.S. citizenship is required. Clearance must be active and transferable prior to the start date.

Nice To Haves

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering.
  • 10 or more years of professional experience in thermal analysis of complex systems requiring collaboration across multiple engineering disciplines.
  • Experience with a solid modeling CAD tool such as CREO or equivalent.
  • Experience in electronics cooling and aerodynamic heating analyses.
  • Demonstrated experience leading thermal testing, including planning, organization, execution, data reduction, and correlation.
  • Earned Value Management System knowledge.
  • Experience supporting EACs, BOEs, and proposals.
  • Experience presenting to external customers.
  • Ability to travel to government and other facilities in support of program activities.
  • Advanced degree in the aforementioned disciplines; ABET accreditation is preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Perform hand calculations to determine the scope of higher-detail analysis models.
  • Perform detailed thermal analyses to solve program thermal challenges.
  • Generate test plans to validate analyses and verify hardware compliance with customer requirements.
  • Analyze test data to validate and correlate models.
  • Work with experienced analysts on moderately complex problems, delivering results within program cost and schedule constraints.
  • Review work with peers to ensure technical accuracy and serve as a peer reviewer for other engineers’ work.
  • Present results to internal, external, and government customers.
  • Generate detailed documentation of work and archive it for reference.
  • Help define, refine, or develop MA&T department technical processes and tools, and/or lead analysis and test teams.
  • Plan and support tests, perform data reduction, and engage in thermal model correlation.
