About The Position

Oracle's Hardware Development Organization is seeking an experienced On-Board Power Engineer for its Server Development team in Santa Clara, California, or Burlington, Massachusetts. The role focuses on architecting, designing, and integrating on-board power delivery subsystems for next-generation AI servers using merchant silicon for compute, storage, and communications. These systems have demanding power requirements and emphasize highly efficient solutions for Oracle's AI cloud and vertically integrated rack-level products. The Electrical Design Engineer will own power subsystem and board-level architecture and detailed design throughout product development, through transition to volume production. The role requires keeping current with developments in power delivery and applying them to reliable Oracle solutions. The engineer may also advise on power systems from previously delivered products.

Requirements

  • BSEE and 7 years of power engineering experience, or MSEE and 5 years of power engineering experience.
  • Experience designing high-power, modern on-board multi-phase VRDs, DC-DC converters, voltage regulators, and Electronic Circuit Breakers.
  • Experience with analog and digital PWM control architectures.
  • Knowledge and application of high-speed design methodologies for Power Integrity and Signal Integrity.
  • Proficiency with the complete flow of CAD design tools such as Cadence, Concept, and Allegro.
  • Proficiency in constraint-driven design methodologies.
  • Experience with power requirements for high-performance CPUs, GPUs, DDR memory DIMMs, PCIe cards, flash modules, and disk drives.
  • Experience tuning DC-DC control loops for stability and transient performance.
  • Experience and understanding of effective PCB stack-up design.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with I2C, PMBUS, or SVID communication buses.
  • Experience with power simulation software such as SPICE, Simplis, or Cadence PowerSI.
  • Experience with testing and validation methods for power devices.
  • Experience with system-level power distribution.
  • Experience with recent Intel, AMD, or ARM chipsets and GPUs.
  • Experience with digital or analog simulation.

Responsibilities

  • Design and test high-power, multi-phase Voltage Regulator Down designs (VRDs) that meet or exceed performance requirements for next-generation third-party CPUs.
  • Select and qualify parts.

  • Guide CAD designers on placement and routing and conduct detailed reviews of CAD work.
  • Lead and participate in formal design reviews.
  • Author specifications and publish bills of materials.
  • Work with VRD controller and power-stage vendors to generate and test configuration files.
  • Design, test, and tune analog and digital DC-DC converters ranging from 500mA to 700A, as well as Electronic Circuit Breakers.
  • Set up and maintain automation platforms used to validate power designs.
  • Design and validate complete power solutions for Oracle's next-generation server machines.
  • Work with internal teams to ensure system and VRD power requirements meet specifications.
  • Collaborate with internal firmware and software teams to implement system-level diagnostics.
  • Work with external vendors to ensure power components meet specifications and regulatory requirements.
  • Bring up and test prototypes and develop and implement test plans.
  • Mentor junior engineers.
  • Perform and lead laboratory debugging of hardware problems.
