Principal, Document Standards & Quality

RELX•Raleigh, NC
•$95,300 - $158,800

About The Position

This role is for a Principal, Document Standards & Quality at LexisNexis Legal & Professional. The individual will own the Document Quality System, enabling AI and engineering teams to produce professional, usable documents. This involves translating expert judgment about document quality into clear standards, reference documents, rules, and measurable specifications that can be built and tested. LexisNexis Legal & Professional is part of RELX and is a leader in deploying AI and advanced technologies to the legal market, with a focus on ethical and powerful generative AI solutions. The company employs over 2,000 technologists, data scientists, and experts.

Requirements

  • Deep expertise in professional document production, such as legal document production, publishing, technical or editorial design, knowledge management, or a similar field, with a track record of setting standards rather than just following them.
  • Expert command of Word-style structure: style-linked numbering, multilevel lists, sections, headers and footers, tables of contents and authorities, cross-references, and tracked changes. You know why a document that looks right can still be broken.
  • Strong typographic and information-design judgment, and the ability to explain why something is wrong, not just that it is.
  • Sound judgment across professional domains, including familiarity with legal and financial document conventions.
  • Experience in a large law firm, legal operations, or legal technology.
  • Experience with document automation, template systems, or design systems.
  • Familiarity with programmatic document generation (OOXML, PDF) and enough technical fluency to review output at the file level.
  • Prior work evaluating or improving AI-generated content

Responsibilities

  • Define "good." Write the canonical standards for typography, hierarchy, whitespace, tables, lists, headings, citations, pagination, headers and footers, exhibits, and numbering.
  • Build a document taxonomy. Define a distinct formatting grammar for each document family (legal briefs, contracts, client memos, research reports, and others). Each gets its own conventions, and you decide where they share a base and where they diverge.
  • Audit AI output. Review several hundred generated documents and build a failure taxonomy. Classify every formatting defect by type, severity, and root cause, and report the patterns.
  • Create gold-standard documents. Produce human-crafted reference documents for each document type, and version them as test fixtures for AI and engineering teams.
  • Turn judgment into rules. Write explicit, testable specifications, for example how Heading 2 behaves, what tables may never do, no orphaned headings, page-break behavior, and numbering that stays linked to styles rather than being typed by hand. Favor real document structure (styles, numbering, sections) over manual visual formatting.
  • Create the quality score. Develop a Document Quality Score covering structural integrity, visual hierarchy, consistency, readability, template compliance, and editability. Work with engineering to make it measurable, automatable where possible, and calibrated against human expert judgment.
  • Be the standards owner. Adjudicate disputes, review new templates, and represent document quality in product and model-evaluation decisions.
