About The Position

The Principal Condition Monitoring Engineer leads condition monitoring and predictive maintenance for power plants and utility substation equipment to improve reliability, availability, and asset life. The role involves monitoring gas turbines, reciprocating generators, diesel and natural-gas generation, associated alternators, balance-of-plant systems, and substation equipment. The engineer combines field inspections, online monitoring, diagnostic testing, and operating-data analysis to detect deterioration, assess equipment health, and recommend timely maintenance. The position partners with operations, maintenance, electrical, mechanical, controls, reliability, and equipment manufacturers to support safe operation and prevent unplanned outages. This role is full-time and on-site at Oracle’s offices in Nashville, Tennessee. Candidates should expect a minimum of 25% travel, with additional travel as business needs require. Relocation assistance may be available under Oracle’s relocation policies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Condition Monitoring, Electromechanical Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • 6–10+ years of relevant experience in power-plant condition monitoring, predictive maintenance, or equipment diagnostics, including practical monitoring of gas turbines and diesel and natural-gas reciprocating generators.
  • Demonstrated ability to monitor utility-substation equipment, including transformers, circuit breakers, switchgear, bushings, cables, and associated auxiliary systems.
  • Strong practical competence in vibration data collection and analysis, infrared thermography, lubricant analysis, ultrasound, and interpretation of operating and performance trends.
  • Advanced expertise interpreting transformer dissolved-gas and insulating-oil analyses, electrical-insulation diagnostics, partial-discharge measurements, and circuit-breaker condition indicators; ability to correlate diagnostic results, identify developing failure modes, assess fault severity, and define specialist testing and corrective actions.
  • High proficiency configuring and using Bently Nevada and other condition-monitoring software for data acquisition, advanced vibration diagnostics, trend analysis, alarm configuration, and equipment-health reporting.
  • Hands-on competence with portable and online monitoring systems, plant historians, and maintenance-management systems, including measurement validation, data integration, and reliable asset-record management.
  • Ability to interpret equipment drawings, single-line diagrams, P&IDs, manufacturer manuals, test reports, and maintenance history, and relate diagnostic findings to equipment failure modes.
  • Strong fault diagnosis, root-cause analysis, technical reporting, and communication skills, including the ability to prioritize equipment risks and coordinate corrective actions across operations, maintenance, and manufacturers.
  • Ability to work safely in operating power plants and substations and support site surveys, planned outages, maintenance windows, and urgent equipment assessments as operational needs require.
  • Ability to travel at least 25%, with additional travel as business needs require.

Nice To Haves

  • Recognized vibration analyst certification at Category II or above; Category III preferred.
  • Relevant thermography, ultrasound, or machinery-lubrication and oil-analysis certification.
  • Experience with advanced gas-turbine and reciprocating-engine diagnostics, generator electrical condition assessment, borescope findings, and correlating multiple diagnostic techniques.
  • Experience with online transformer monitoring, bushing and partial-discharge monitoring, breaker diagnostics, substation asset-health indexing, and risk-based maintenance planning.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and manage condition-monitoring programs, asset-criticality assessments, inspection routes, monitoring frequencies, baseline measurements, and return-to-service activities for generation and utility substation assets.
  • Perform vibration analysis using spectra, time waveforms, phase, envelope analysis, and operating trends to identify rotating-equipment faults.
  • Lead condition-monitoring programs for power-generation and utility-substation assets, setting priorities, baselines, alarm thresholds, and escalation criteria.
  • Monitor gas turbines, diesel and natural-gas reciprocating generators, alternators, and auxiliary equipment using vibration analysis, thermography, lubricant analysis, ultrasound, and operating trends.
  • Assess utility-substation equipment, including transformers, bushings, circuit breakers, switchgear, and cables, using thermal surveys, oil and dissolved-gas analysis, and applicable electrical diagnostic results.
  • Interpret transformer dissolved-gas and oil-quality results, moisture, temperature, cooling-system performance, and bushing and tap-changer condition, correlating trends with loading, operating history, and laboratory findings.
  • Conduct infrared thermography and ultrasound surveys; assess partial-discharge data where applicable, breaker operating times and contact resistance, insulating-medium condition, and insulation-test results with electrical testing specialists.
  • Establish and periodically review condition baselines, alarm thresholds, diagnostic rules, and escalation criteria using manufacturer guidance, operating context, equipment history, and applicable standards; coordinate changes through approved controls.
  • Analyze alarms and abnormal trends, validate data, assess fault severity and progression, and issue actionable recommendations addressing urgency, operating implications, inspection needs, and maintenance priorities.
  • Translate findings into maintenance work orders, outage scopes, repair and replacement recommendations, and asset-life assessments; track actions through closure and confirm equipment condition after maintenance.
  • Support commissioning, acceptance testing, startup and shutdown monitoring, load testing, and return-to-service activities by establishing baselines and identifying abnormal equipment behavior.
  • Maintain diagnostic reports, asset-health dashboards, inspection records, and computerized maintenance management system data; report defect detection, monitoring coverage, action closure, and reliability improvement; train site personnel.
