About The Position

Within the context of a client and family centered recovery model and in accordance with established standards of professional practice and vision and values of the organization, provides support services to youth and their parents, families and caregivers. Using a variety of theoretical models facilitates and delivers workshops, presentations and events. Works primarily with parents and families to implement proactive approaches to support the prevention of youth substance use. Partners with staff within prevention initiatives in schools and communities to identify trends, needs and priorities for service. Coordinates, plans and implements relevant methods of outreach to strengthen parent/family awareness, knowledge and skills to prevent, delay and intervene with respect to adolescent substance use. Provides brief intervention counselling services as required.

Requirements

  • Bachelors Degree in a Social or Behavioural Science from a recognized program.
  • Two (2) years recent related experience providing intervention counseling/treatment of substance use to youth and families.
  • Valid BC Driver’s License.
  • Local area travel requires the use of a personal vehicle.
  • Knowledge of the social, emotional, health and substance use-related issues encountered by youth populations.
  • Broad knowledge of youth mental health promotion, illness and treatment.
  • Broad knowledge of substance abuse and addictions, health promotion, harm reduction and treatment.
  • Broad knowledge of strength based, effective individual, family and group psychotherapeutic and counselling skills, theories, Brief Strategic Family Therapy, family systems, anti-oppressive practice, trauma informed practice, narrative therapy, solution focused therapy, motivational interviewing, CBT, DBT.
  • Knowledge of relevant approaches to addressing the needs of youth and families involved with substance use issues.
  • Knowledge in child/youth care development, behaviour management as it relates to addiction and substance use.
  • Broad knowledge of other related programs, facilities and community resources.
  • Broad knowledge of working in partnership with schools and community resources.
  • Knowledge of youth resources in Vancouver, social and community services.
  • Ability to develop and implement trauma-informed, strengths-based, client-centered prevention, support, wellness and family engagement programming.
  • Ability to perform a range of needs assessments with both individuals and groups.
  • Knowledge of community development, adult education and health promotion practices.
  • Ability to develop and facilitate workshops.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain supportive, trusting and professional relationships with youth and adults.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships.
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare and maintain a variety of charts, records and reports.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with clients and their families, colleagues, physician, and other health care staff, both one-on-one and in groups.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize workload and adapt to a changing community.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
