The Prepared Foods Assistant Manager partners with the Department Manager to oversee the department, including financial stewardship, customer service, merchandising, food safety, work safety, communication, hiring, training, and performance management. Requirements

  • Previous food service, retail, or grocery management experience required.
  • Knowledge of retail grocery Prepared Foods, Deli, or food production department and/or similar restaurant, café, or food industry experience required.
  • Entry to mid-level computer proficiency required.
  • Skills to manage financial results, including labor, sales, and profit margin.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills required.
  • Basic to intermediate math and computation skills required.
  • Skills to read, understand, and follow through on verbal and written instructions.
  • Skills to exercise good judgment at all times.
  • Skills to resolve conflicts and analyze a variety of situations to find a solution.
  • Ability to speak, read, and understand English.

  • Experience with Excel and inventory software preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Partners with Department Manager to manage the department and staff, including financial stewardship, customer service, department conditions, merchandising, food safety, work safety, communication, hiring, training, and performance management.

  • Assesses, prioritizes, and delegates tasks and production.
  • Ensures consistency of department conditions, including stocking, rotation, facing, merchandising standards, and category schematics.
  • Ensures satisfactory in-stock conditions and maintains appropriate inventory levels to achieve sales and margin goals.
  • Orders Prepared Foods products according to anticipated sales and seasonal needs.
  • Trains staff to write orders and production schedules consistent with department goals and standards.
  • Builds displays and arranges department products for attractive presentations, highlighting featured/unique/seasonal items.
  • Plans for weekly ads, events, and holidays using tools and reports.
  • Maintains professional vendor relationships.
  • Develops and maintains teamwork among all members of the team.
  • Ensures customer special orders are accurately placed and delivered.
  • Receives and unloads merchandise, checking quality, count, and condition.
  • Stocks and rotates products with attention to product quality and expiration dates.
  • Maintains organization, rotation, and cleanliness of back stock areas.
  • Assists customers with product selection, shares product knowledge, and makes recommendations.
  • Wraps, weighs, and prices products according to department policy.
  • Processes customers’ made-to-order items accurately and expeditiously.
  • Assists with food preparation and production.
  • Plans, leads, and analyzes monthly perishable inventory.
  • Demonstrates and shares knowledge of products and industry trends, including culinary terminology, product labeling, and dietary restrictions.
  • Demonstrates understanding of labor, sales, and margin goals and factors influencing them.
  • Works to meet labor and margin goals and schedules department accordingly.
  • Develops and executes plans when results do not meet expectations.
  • Coaches department to maintain appropriate, accurate, and organized inventory and back stock.
  • Handles damaged and spoiled product according to company policy.
  • Maintains working knowledge of department equipment and trains staff and troubleshoots errors.
  • Leverages resources and labor to maximize efficiency without compromising quality and service standards.
  • Balances administrative tasks with presence on the floor.
  • Performs other tasks and duties as assigned.
