About The Position

Volunteers of America Northern California & Northern Nevada (VOA-NCNN), a Certified Great Place to Work, is recruiting for a part-time Prep Cook for the Family Shelter at our Parker House program. Parker House is an 85-bed facility providing short-term emergency housing (up to 30 days) and intensive supportive services for homeless families with dependent children. Part-time employees are eligible for paid holidays, vacation, and sick pay.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and comprehend oral and written instructions and to provide services to clients without ethnic or social prejudices.
  • Basic understanding of professional cooking and knife handling skills required.
  • Understanding and knowledge of safety, sanitation and food handling procedures required.
  • Proven experience as prep cook with working knowledge of health and safety codes in the kitchen.
  • Manual dexterity, able to operate cutting tools and various kitchen utensils.
  • Must have current Serv Safe certification or obtain within 30 days of beginning position.
  • Valid California driver's license and ability to meet the organization’s insurance carrier guidelines are required.
  • Must pass all required background clearances in accordance with agency, County, State, and federal standards.
  • CPR/First Aid certification is required within 90 days of employment.
  • Completion and maintenance of all required training and health clearances.

Nice To Haves

  • One year of related prep or line cook experience is preferred.
  • General knowledge of issues and challenges unique to homelessness, substance abuse, young adults, minorities, and people with disabilities is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for performing daily work requirements to achieve established objectives of the program.
  • Completes the daily prep list created by Head Chef.
  • Labels, stocks, and organizes all recipe ingredients so that items are easily accessible.
  • Measures ingredients according to prep list (including seasonings) for recipes.
  • Basic cooking duties such as reducing sauces, parboiling food etc.
  • Prepare simple dishes such as sides, salads, etc.
  • Maintains a clean and orderly kitchen by washing dishes, sanitizing surfaces, taking out trash, keeping pantry and packaging organized, etc.
  • Ensures all food and other items (like chemicals, packaging, and supplies) are stored and stocked properly
  • Complies with nutrition, food safety and sanitation guidelines.
  • Ensures compliance with all VOA policies, CARF standards, and safety and security regulations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned
  • Continually learn and enhance technical and interpersonal skills.
  • Attend all staff meetings, assigned training, and complete required certifications, CPR, First Aid, etc.
