About The Position

MANTECH seeks a motivated, career- and customer-oriented Precision Fabrication Scientist to join its team in Livermore, California. This onsite role supports scientific research for Department of Energy programs. The position manufactures and assembles target parts, performs precision metrology, and leads project management initiatives. The posting also refers to the role as Metrology Engineer. The successful candidate will inspect and measure target components and assemblies against sub-micron specifications, document and analyze process data, develop procedures and investigation reports, help diagnose nonconforming parts or equipment issues, and support the fabrication and assembly of target packages. The role involves handling valuable and extremely fragile components while following safe operating procedures and practices.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent, with qualifying experience substitutions: six additional years of experience with a high school diploma, or four additional years of experience with an associate degree; and at least 2 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience with record keeping, data recording, and documentation.
  • Ability to learn, navigate, and operate computer software, metrology instrumentation, and microscopes.
  • Attention to detail and ability to identify nonconforming specifications, correct erroneous process steps, and suggest process enhancements.
  • Good communication skills and ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and prioritize multiple assignments.
  • Experience working across technical teams to drive operational agendas and manage technical documentation.
  • U.S. citizenship is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree with 5 years of relevant experience in target fabrication, metrology, and precision assembly.
  • Direct experience handling very small, delicate components and interpreting complex engineering drawings to apply fabrication procedures.
  • Hands-on experience operating process-control software, data management systems, and specialized metrology instrumentation.
  • Strong problem-solving and organizational skills, with the ability to convey technical ideas efficiently and effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Perform in-process and final metrology and inspections on target components and assemblies using optical microscopes, white light interferometers, and laser confocal microscopes to verify sub-micron specifications.
  • Work independently and with target fabrication engineers, assemblers, and machinists in a fast-paced environment to meet production deadlines.
  • Record process data in laboratory notebooks and digital spreadsheets, analyze data using standard statistical methods, and prepare quality assurance documentation.
  • Write standard operating procedures for metrology and fabrication processes, prepare root cause investigation reports, and train team members to execute procedures.
  • Recognize and report out-of-specification parts or operational equipment issues, assist with diagnosing them, and propose and develop metrology methods for first-of-a-kind samples.
  • Position target components using custom fixtures, apply adhesives, verify assembled target geometry, and manage simple projects from start to finish to deliver target packages.
  • Handle valuable and extremely fragile components while strictly following safe operating procedures and practices.
