About The Position

Performs administrative support work following procedures set by the director of the pre-trial office in regards to the appointment of counsel to indigent defendants. Duties include assists in the day-to-day operation of the office receiving legal documents; entering data into automated legal systems, verifying data and processing data. Positions in this class perform routine data entry and identify needed corrective actions to resolve discrepancies; answer accounting questions; and maintain legal documents and records.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • One (1) year of experience performing secretarial and/or administrative support work
  • Tasks require the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (5-10 pounds).
  • Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or work station.
  • Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds and visual cues or signals.
  • Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

Responsibilities

  • Answers phones and greet all visitors to the pre-trial office; answers general questions pertaining to defendants' cases and handle new inquires as well as general questions from attorneys assigned to the pre-trial wheel.
  • Answers general questions pertaining to defendants' cases and handles new inquires as well as general questions from attorneys assigned to the pre-trial wheel; travels to Brownsville municipal court to handle magistration for pre-trial services.
  • Interviews defendants and family members for pretrial bonds; work criminal court as assigned to assist in the appointments of counsel; researches dockets for criminal courts prior to court dates for defendants and advises court of appointed attorneys.
  • Travels to County Jail to qualify defendants for indigency and or pretrial bonds as well to attend writs of habeas corpus hearings to assist the local magistrate.
  • Advises attorneys of appointments to their clients by email; creates a file for the specific defendant; works every aspect pertaining to the pre-trial office as assigned.
  • Provides assistance and information to attorneys, employees, managers, vendors, citizens, local businesses, and/or and other interested parties regarding assigned pre-trial functions; serves as liaison between supervisors, vendors, and other departments in regards to Pre-Trial Services office.
  • Explains policies and procedures.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
