About The Position

Provide day to day care to children in the Pre K classroom using developmentally appropriate curriculum and assessment, and by building responsive relationships with children and families. This role involves working with a First Class Auxiliary Teacher as a team to positively impact child outcomes and establish a calm and nurturing classroom. The teacher will plan and implement daily programs, provide emotional and instructional support, promote safety and positive guidance, and maintain an orderly classroom environment. Additionally, the role requires documenting observations, promoting positive health and nutrition practices, conducting parent/teacher conferences, making referrals for services, and participating in professional development. The teacher is also responsible for training and overseeing the auxiliary teacher, substitutes, and volunteers.

Requirements

  • Must comply with all employment criteria legally established by the Lee County Board of Education.
  • Must hold an appropriate Alabama Professional Educator Certificate.
  • Demonstrated aptitude for successful completion of the assigned task.
  • Must meet the suitability criteria for employment as required by the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457.
  • Upon offer of employment, employees will be required to submit legible fingerprints for a background review by the Alabama Bureau of Investigation and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Nice To Haves

  • A Bachelor’s Degree concentrated in Early Childhood Education or Child Development from an accredited institution is preferred.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

Responsibilities

  • Provide day to day care to children in the Pre K classroom using developmentally appropriate curriculum and assessment.
  • Build responsive relationships with children and families.
  • Work with First Class Auxiliary Teacher as a team to have a positive impact on child outcomes and establishing a calm and nurturing classroom.
  • Meet with auxiliary teacher to plan for the next day, reviewing content of the lesson plan and specific support roles for that day using effective communications, mutual respect and openness to receiving feedback.
  • Establish positive, productive relationships with children and families; encourage parent involvement in the program and support family relationships.
  • Maintain and display a daily schedule that is well-balanced in the Head Start classroom where assigned.
  • Create a content rich lesson plan that is appropriate and has challenging activities designed to meet the needs of the children.
  • Demonstrate an understanding and maintain familiarity of the Head Start Performance Standards, First Class Pre-K Guidelines, the current Head Start Program review instrument, DHR licensing standards, USDA requirements, NAEYC Early Childhood Standards.
  • Responsible for planning, supervising, and implementing the daily program in accordance with Head Start Performance Standards, First Class Pre-K Guidelines, and Lee County Policies & Procedures.
  • Provide all children with emotional support, classroom organization, and instructional support utilizing CLASS Domains and Dimensions.
  • Promote safety practices using active supervision indoors and outdoors.
  • Use a variety of positive guidance such as redirection, positive statements, positive classroom/playground rules, stories, pictures, and role-play to help children control negative behavior.
  • Maintain orderly arrangement of room, teaching materials, and supplies, and the preparation of room and materials for daily activities.
  • Demonstrate competence and assist in utilizing GOLD and the Alabama Early Learning Guidelines to fidelity, documenting observations while assisting children with support in each CLASS domain and dimension.
  • Promote positive health and nutrition practices including cleanliness.
  • Ensure meals are served in a pleasant and positive social environment and eat with the children.
  • Responsible for keeping the playground clean and free of hazardous materials and conditions.
  • Conduct parent/teacher conferences at least twice a year and as needed.
  • Assist families and children needing health services or social services by making appropriate referrals.
  • Participate in staff meetings, in-service training, workshops, and staff development programs to obtain additional job-related skills to improve daily performance.
  • Train auxiliary teacher in such a manner that he/she may take charge of the classroom in the absence of the teacher.
  • Advise and oversee the duties of the auxiliary teacher, substitutes, and volunteers.
