About The Position

The Power Plant Control Technician is responsible for the operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and optimization of power generation control systems. This role supports continuous, safe, and reliable electrical power generation through expert oversight of instrumentation, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems. The incumbent serves as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) for generator control and display systems, providing technical leadership for system upgrades, compatibility reviews, and contractor coordination during installation, checkout, and commissioning. The position supports diesel power generation assets ranging from 1 MW to 4 MW, including manufacturer-supplied control systems, and ensures compliance with safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements.

Requirements

  • Comprehensive knowledge of diesel power generation systems, including operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of generators rated approximately 1,000 kW to 4,400 kW.
  • Strong understanding of electrical theory and compliance requirements under NEC, NFPA, OSHA, and applicable industry standards.
  • Demonstrated experience with power plant instrumentation, control systems, PLCs, and SCADA systems, including programming and troubleshooting.
  • Ability to evaluate technical risks, review control system designs, and ensure installed equipment complies with applicable codes and standards.
  • Working knowledge of environmental, health, and safety regulations applicable to electrical utility operations.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and apply technical documentation, including schematics, blueprints, manuals, and work orders.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills with the ability to work effectively with technical teams, contractors, and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced operational environment.
  • Physically capable of performing job duties including standing, bending, climbing, and walking.
  • Fluent in English (reading, writing, and speaking).
  • Valid driver’s license with the ability to operate manual and automatic transmission vehicles.
  • Ability to meet all medical, dental, drug screening, and background check requirements for deployment.

Nice To Haves

  • Relevant work-related training and certifications are highly preferred, including but not limited to: Journeyman or Master Electrician License, OSHA 30-Hour (Construction and/or General Industry), NFPA 70E – Electrical Safety in the Workplace, CPR/First Aid/AED Certification, Generator Operations and Maintenance Certification, SCADA or Industrial Control Systems (ICS) Training, Arc Flash and Electrical Hazard Analysis Training, Environmental Compliance Training.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate with Supervisors to support all electrical power generation operations and maintenance activities in compliance with applicable safety and regulatory standards.
  • Provide technical oversight for inspection, troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of power plant instrumentation, control systems, generators, switchgear, and fuel systems.
  • Perform and oversee preventive and corrective maintenance activities to ensure control systems and displays operate within established technical parameters.
  • Serve as the SME for control and instrumentation systems, coordinating directly with equipment manufacturers on upgrades, configuration changes, and problem resolution.
  • Review new equipment installations for compatibility with existing control systems and coordinate contractor activities during control checkout, testing, and commissioning.
  • Monitor system performance, identify operational risks, and implement corrective actions to improve reliability, efficiency, and system availability.
  • Lead and mentor power plant personnel; ensure proper documentation, logs, reports, and records are maintained in accordance with contractual and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, NFPA, NEC, and applicable environmental standards related to power generation and distribution.
  • Coordinate with engineering, logistics, and procurement teams to maintain up-to-date control drawings, spare parts inventories, and on-island critical spares, including MRN tracking.
  • Participate in standby/on-call rotations as required to support 24/7 operations.
  • Adhere to all safety rules and procedures, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Perform other duties as assigned to meet contractual, operational, and mission requirements.
