About The Position

The Power Equipment Operator II position is responsible for operating all power equipment vehicles, trucks and heavy equipment, both on road and off road to repair and maintain roads and flood channels, airport landings and parking lots, parks, wilderness areas and beach facilities. This position may act as lead over crews of various sizes to accomplish assigned projects and instruct trainee operators in the correct and safe operation of all power equipment. This position may be required to fight fires in some assignments.

Requirements

  • Possession of a valid Class A California Driver License with no restrictions for manual transmission (E) or for tractor-trailer combination connected by a fifth-wheel (O), and any special endorsement required by the Department of Motor Vehicles, including the tank vehicle endorsement is required before the date of appointment and while employed in this classification.
  • Driving record must not have a citation for reckless driving or a citation related to driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol or other restrictions that negatively impact insurability.
  • Incumbents will be subject to random, reasonable suspicion and post-accident drug and alcohol testing.
  • Possess valid California Driver's License, Class A and tank endorsement.
  • Extensive understanding of safety regulations and experience in conducting safety training programs.

Responsibilities

  • Direct traffic, place traffic control devices as needed and directing haul trucks to dump sites.
  • Haul materials such as rocks, base and dirt in support of flood channels and road maintenance.
  • Read, shoot and set grade stakes to complete projects.
  • Sit and operate controls for prolonged periods of time, up to 10 hours per day with scheduled rest periods and lunch breaks.
  • Coordinate various project activities with government agencies, partners and staff.
  • Use Computer Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) to receive work orders, and document the completion of tasks.
  • Document project information such as staff's hours, materials used and equipment.
  • Perform safe work practices while operating power equipment vehicles, trucks and heavy construction equipment.
  • Secure loads and equipment for transportation.
  • Follow strict guidelines for traffic safety regulations.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on equipment.
  • Identify, report and correct equipment problems in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Maintain up-to-date technical knowledge, certifications, licenses, etc.
  • Instruct and lead small crews while taking responsibility for decisions and actions in completion of projects.
  • Lead and review the work of team members on multiple projects.
  • Establish and maintain positive working relationships through effective communication with peers, supervisor, stakeholders, contractors, the general public and government officials and staff.
  • Speak, read, write and understand English at a level required of successful job performance.
  • Compile clearly written technical reports involving mathematical computations.
  • Understand and follow written and oral instructions, including work orders and survey markers.
