About The Position

The County of Riverside's Transportation Department has multiple opportunities for Equipment Operator II positions within the Highway Operations Division, with assignments assigned in Riverside and Corona. The Equipment Operator II will be responsible for skillfully operating a variety of motorized construction and maintenance equipment in support of the construction, reconstruction, and maintenance of County roadways. The Equipment Operator II requires advanced training and the ability to perform complex tasks using a wide range of heavy equipment, including loaders, backhoes, motor graders, large track-type dozers, oil mixers, hot mix paving equipment, low-bed tractors, and trailers. Competitive candidates will possess experience in roadway maintenance or construction, including the operation of heavy equipment such as backhoes, bulldozers, compactors, excavators, loaders, scrapers, and water trucks. They should also demonstrate knowledge of the safety procedures and operational rules associated with this equipment. Additionally, candidates should have substantial experience operating and maintaining heavy gasoline and diesel-powered trucks and be capable of performing a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks. This position follows a 4/10 schedule, consisting of four 10-hour shifts with weekends off. The Equipment Operator II may be required to stay overnight during the workweek, depending on operational demands, and overtime may be required as needed. The Equipment Operator II is distinguished from the Equipment Operator I classification by the latter's relatively simple forms of manipulation and coordination in the operation of construction equipment. The Equipment Operator II is further distinguished from the Senior Equipment Operator classification by the latter having lead responsibility over crews operating a variety of tracked and/or wheeled motorized construction equipment. The Transportation Department is responsible for planning, designing, funding, building, operating and maintaining all roads, bridges, and transportation facilities within the unincorporated County territory.

Requirements

  • Two years in the maintenance or construction of public work facilities (e.g., roads, airports, landfills, or flood control channels) which included one year operating tracked and/or wheeled motorized construction equipment as a primary duty.
  • Possession of a valid Class B California Driver’s License at time of the application.
  • Knowledge of the tools, materials, and equipment commonly used in public works construction and maintenance; the operation and maintenance of gasoline and diesel powered construction and maintenance equipment.
  • Ability to perform a variety of skilled maintenance and construction tasks, including working to grade; safely operate tracked and/or wheeled motorized equipment; read plans and specifications relating to construction and field maintenance work; follow oral and written directions.

Responsibilities

  • Operate tracked and/or wheeled motorized construction equipment (e.g., loaders, excavators, motor graders, scrapers, refuse compactors, oil mixers, and dozers) within required tolerance in the maintenance and construction of roads, landfills, flood control channels, and other public work facilities.
  • Prepare, grade, and shape new county roads, landfills, and flood control channels; check and set grades.
  • Work from survey reference marks, plans, and specifications; clear roads, channels and other facilities of storm debris and damage; construct and repair storm drains, culverts, catch basins, and concrete gutters.
  • Service and maintain assigned equipment; may operate low-bed or trucks with trailers in hauling equipment or materials.
  • Use a variety of hand and power tools in performing work.
