About The Position

The Power Cable Technician Sub- Foreman will be responsible for splicing, terminating, and/or repairing XLPE, PILC, and PR cables and cable terminations. This role involves installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing distribution and/or transmission cable systems ranging from 12kV to 230kV. The successful candidate will plan, supervise, and lead crews in the execution of work, with a solid understanding of quality control standards, condition assessment, inspection, and testing procedures for cable installation and maintenance. Strong communication skills are essential for coordinating work assignments and liaising with management on project progress. This position is based out of our Surrey Operational Centre.

Requirements

  • Proficiency working with PILC cable, splices, and terminations.
  • Willingness and ability to travel on an as-needed basis.
  • Ability to pass a "Show Me" test with the governing utility.
  • Capable of leading a team, working collaboratively, or operating independently.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills in English.
  • Journeyman certification or trade qualification from a recognized apprenticeship program or cable manufacturer (or ability to obtain).
  • Experience working with voltages from 12kV to 230kV.
  • Minimum 5–10 years of relevant industry experience.
  • Class 3 Driver's License or higher with a clean abstract is preferred.
  • Ability to obtain certifications in Confined Space Entry, WHMIS, and Asbestos awareness.

Responsibilities

  • Build, maintain, and repair underground electrical power transmission and distribution systems.
  • Plan, organize, and lead workers in carrying out assigned duties and tasks.
  • Splice overhead, underground, or submarine multi-conductor cables for electric power or telecommunications systems.
  • Interpret notes, drawings, and documentation to ensure materials are assembled and used correctly.
  • Read and communicate a broad range of code books, industry standards, safe work methods, and regulations to ensure compliance with industry and manufacturer requirements.
  • Routinely apply standards and regulations related to safe work practices, overhead distribution, high and low voltage applications, stringing procedures, line clearing, and underground cable installations.
  • Interpret construction drawings to determine the physical layout of work environments.
  • Operate a range of vehicles and equipment including mobile cranes, reel tensioners and pullers, and trenchers, along with various hand, power, electrical testing, and hot line tools.
  • Assess tool and equipment requirements based on job specifications.
  • Work in confined spaces such as trenches and vaults; the role involves sustained physical activity including standing, bending, crawling, crouching, stooping, heavy lifting, climbing, pulling cables, and reaching.
  • Identify and assess hazards, including proper location of underground infrastructure.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment while following correct cable preparation and splicing techniques.
  • Ensure all crew members adhere to safe work procedures at all times.
