About The Position

Asian Law Caucus (ALC) is seeking applications from law students or recent law graduates interested in pursuing fellowships with the organization. ALC is the nation's first legal organization dedicated to advancing and defending the civil rights of Asian and Pacific Islander (API) communities. Since 1972, ALC has been involved in various legal and advocacy efforts, including fighting for affordable housing, litigating civil rights cases, advocating for policy changes, and providing community education, advocacy, and direct client representation. The organization operates across several program areas: Immigrant Justice, Workers' Rights, Housing Rights, and the National Democracy Initiative. ALC is based in San Francisco and its building in Chinatown is a notable example of affordable housing preservation.

Requirements

  • Law student or recent law graduate
  • Interest in partnering with ALC
  • Demonstrated commitment to ALC's mission and issue areas
  • Relevant experience
  • Proficiency in a language other than English may be eligible for language premiums
  • Must submit a letter of interest, resume, transcript, writing sample (no more than 10 pages), and three professional references (including one direct supervisor reference).

Responsibilities

  • Pursue the promise of democracy for all through projects like election protection and voting rights advocacy.
  • Litigate and engage in community campaigns to preserve birthright citizenship.
  • Provide narrative, advocacy, and legal support for community partner organizations.
  • Support the Asian American Leaders Table and coalition-building efforts.
  • Defend the rights of low-income tenants in the Bay Area and Northern California.
  • Provide culturally and linguistically competent assistance to immigrant communities, seniors, and individuals with disabilities.
  • Engage in community education and outreach regarding housing rights.
  • Advocate for local and state policies that preserve housing, create affordable housing options, and decrease inequities in housing and land use.
  • Work at the intersection of the U.S. criminal legal and immigration systems to keep families and communities together.
  • Represent and advocate for low-income immigrants facing deportation due to criminal convictions.
  • Partner with community members, families, and immigrant rights groups to delay and stop deportations and dismantle systems of mass incarceration.
  • Strengthen worker power and defend labor protections.
  • Engage in direct services, strategic litigation, and policy advocacy on issues including immigration-related threats, wage and hour violations, retaliation, and race/national origin discrimination.
  • Work closely with worker centers and community partners to support worker organizing.
