About The Position

Carnegie Mellon University's Department of Chemical Engineering is seeking Postdoctoral Fellows for a translational biomedical research project. This project involves developing a microfluidic technology for loading molecules and nanoparticles into red blood cells ex vivo, with the aim of using red blood cells as a biocompatible drug depot for extended release. The role will be part of a highly interdisciplinary team of engineers and scientists across Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh Trauma & Transfusion Medicine Research Center. The initial contract is for one year and is renewable for up to five additional years, based on performance and funding availability. A flexible start date is available, with a preference for June 2026. Applications will be reviewed until the position is filled.

Requirements

  • PhD in Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field (or close to completion).
  • Expertise in one or more of the following areas: microfluidics, instrumentation engineering, nanomaterials, rheology, formulations, and in vitro testing.
  • A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.
  • Successful background check.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct research experiments within the predetermined research scope and methodology of department and university.
  • Document research results for use in project sponsor status reports and publications.
  • Assist in the acquisition of supplemental and/or ongoing funding for current and future research projects, travel grants and/or foundation awards.
  • Plan, coordinate and distribute information for meetings, conferences and publications.
  • Conduct occasional meetings with project sponsor personnel.
  • Other duties as assigned.
