About The Position

Carnegie Mellon University's Department of Chemical Engineering is seeking Postdoctoral Fellows for a translational biomedical research project. This project involves developing a microfluidic technology for loading molecules and nanoparticles into red blood cells ex vivo, with the aim of using red blood cells as a biocompatible drug depot for extended release. The role will be part of a highly interdisciplinary team of engineers and scientists across Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh Trauma & Transfusion Medicine Research Center. The initial contract is for one year and is renewable for up to five additional years, based on performance and funding availability. A flexible start date is available, with a preference for June 2026. Applications will be reviewed until the position is filled.

Requirements

PhD in Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field (or close to completion).
Expertise in one or more of the following areas: microfluidics, instrumentation engineering, nanomaterials, rheology, formulations, and in vitro testing.
A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.
Successful background check.

Responsibilities

Conduct research experiments within the predetermined research scope and methodology of department and university.
Document research results for use in project sponsor status reports and publications.
Assist in the acquisition of supplemental and/or ongoing funding for current and future research projects, travel grants and/or foundation awards.
Plan, coordinate and distribute information for meetings, conferences and publications.
Conduct occasional meetings with project sponsor personnel.
Other duties as assigned.
