About The Position

The University of Maryland School of Nursing (UMSON) is seeking a full-time Postdoctoral Fellow with a focus on: (1) geriatrics/gerontology, (2) community engagement/health disparities, or (3) pain and symptom science and multiomics. The Department of Research & Scholarship provides an effective infrastructure that partners with faculty members in developing, facilitating, and supporting their research and scholarship goals. The office assures that all research conducted complies with relevant federal, state, and University research regulations. It collaborates with UMSON’s Administrative Services sponsored program team and collaborates with UMSON’s four organized research centers including The Biology & Behavior Across the Lifespan (BBAL) Center, The Center for Health Equity Outcomes Research (CHEOR), Placebo Beyond Opinions (PBO) Center, and the SYNAPSE Center. The Biology & Behavior Across the Lifespan (BBAL) Center investigates the prevention and management of disease, the optimization of health, and the ways in which behaviors can influence disease prevalence and progression. The Center for Health Equity Outcomes Research (CHEOR) Center promotes community-oriented, interdisciplinary research to understand and address conditions that shape health, health equity, and health care. Placebo Beyond Opinions (PBO) Center promotes interdisciplinary investigation of the placebo phenomenon in health care and nurtures a higher education placebo research program. The SYNAPSE Center investigates symptom science using neuroscientific and psychological approaches. These centers serve as a hub for pooling resources and facilitating data sharing across a diverse range of projects. Their members provide leadership within the School of Nursing to guide research respective to their focus, providing numerous activities to support its researchers in training, service, and discovery. Requirements

  • Ph.D. with a focus on: (1) geriatrics/gerontology, (2) community engagement/health disparities, or (3) pain and symptom science and multiomics
  • Evidence of scholarly achievement in terms of data-based publications, extramural funding for pre-doctoral research training and participation in regional or national research presentations.
  • Independent, self-motivated, and enthusiastic candidates.
  • Recent graduates are encouraged to apply.
  • Qualified candidates must possess good oral and written communication skills.
  • Due to the eligibility requirements of the fellowship funding source, applicants must be U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents.

Responsibilities

  • Pursue activities that promote future success as an independent researcher.
  • Develop, conduct, and publish research.
  • Substantively contribute to the research and scholarship efforts of either the BBAL, CHEOR, PBO, or SYNAPSE Centers through the dissemination of peer-reviewed, data-based publications.
  • Actively participate in center activities.
  • Meet regularly with the faculty mentor to ensure productive experience.
  • Work with the Associate Dean (AD) of the PhD program and faculty mentor to develop and implement an Individual Development Plan (IDP) that will be updated at least annually and then reviewed with their mentor and AD PhD.
  • In consultation with the faculty mentor, present research findings at professional meetings and symposiums.
  • Obtain information about and leverage data obtained during postdoctoral program to apply for research grant opportunities.
  • Actively participate in the UMSON/UMB research community, including presenting research at least annually in on-campus forums and participating in research seminars and centers aligned with their research.
