About The Position

The DeVita Lab of the Drug Discovery Institute and Dept of Pharmacological Sciences pursues novel drug targets in collaboration with clinicians and PI labs at Mt Sinai as a collaborative approach for translational science to develop new therapeutics for unmet medical needs. Active projects include projects directed to treat diabetes, IBD/Crohn’s disease, cancer and rare genetic diseases.

Requirements

  • PhD in organic synthesis required
  • Knowledge of heterocyclic chemistry
  • Knowledge of organometallic chemistry
  • Preparation, purification and characterization of compounds in chemistry laboratory
  • Documentation of all experiments in electronic lab notebooks (ELN) including written, publication quality, experimental procedures.
  • Operation and maintenance of laboratory instruments - HPLC and LC-MS, for example.
  • Safe laboratory habits and experimental practices.
  • Strong collaboration skills with chemistry team members and biology collaborator labs.
  • Strong background in organic chemistry in the area of organic synthesis, heterocyclic and organometallic chemistry
  • Compound purification, characterization using NMR spectroscopy and analysis of reaction products using TLC and LC-MS techniques
  • Methodology development
  • Design of novel analogs
  • Design and testing of synthetic routes to desired, novel compounds.
  • Excellent English written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to prepare and document experimental procedures for manuscript submission, patent applications with journal quality submission.

Nice To Haves

  • Structure-based drug design using the Schrodinger suite desired
  • Competence in Schrodinger suite of software for structure-based drug design and ligand docking is desired
  • Earned doctorate in organic chemistry with specific experience in total synthesis, heterocyclic and organometallic chemistry
  • Demonstrated experience in the synthesis, purification, and analysis of complex organic molecules
  • Experience with new method development, rapid analog and library synthesis techniques
  • Multi-step synthetic processes and larger, multi-gram reaction scale-up.
  • Microwave assisted synthesis.
  • Excellent reaction trouble shooting skills.
  • Experience with the safe handling of reactive and air-sensitive materials.
  • Characterization of new molecules by NMR and LC-MS.
  • Competence with Schrodinger suite of software for structure-based drug design and ligand docking is desired with training available for those with an interest to learn this capability.

Responsibilities

  • Synthesis of novel medicinal compounds for testing in in vitro and in vivo assays that support the basic biology, translational science and drug discovery research efforts.
