Postdoctoral Fellow- Dr. Miller

The University of Alabama at Birmingham Portal•Birmingham, AL

About The Position

A postdoctoral position is available in the laboratory of C. Ryan Miller in the Department of Pathology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. The fellow will develop and apply bioinformatics approaches to investigate the molecular drivers of malignant brain tumors and identify therapeutic opportunities. The role is part of a collaborative, multidisciplinary research environment focused on gliomas and other central nervous system tumors, working with investigators across pathology, neuro-oncology, neurosurgery, cancer biology, genomics, proteomics, and computational biology. The fellow will have access to patient-derived datasets, molecular profiling technologies, and resources from the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center. Projects will involve integrative analysis of large-scale multiomic datasets from human tumors and experimental models, including bulk and single-cell transcriptomics, epigenomics, proteomics, and emerging spatial technologies. The position offers opportunities for scientific independence, high-impact publications, grant development, and career advancement in cancer genomics and computational biology.

Requirements

  • PhD, MD/PhD, or equivalent doctoral degree in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Genomics, Systems Biology, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience analyzing next-generation sequencing data.
  • Proficiency in R, Python, and related computational languages.
  • Experience working in Linux and high-performance computing environments.
  • Experience with agentic coding practices.
  • Strong quantitative, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience analyzing bulk RNA-seq and single-cell RNA-seq datasets.
  • Experience analyzing epigenomic data, including CUT&RUN, ChIP-seq, ATAC-seq, chromatin accessibility, or DNA methylation profiling.
  • Experience analyzing proteomics data, including mass spectrometry-based and non-mass-spectrometry-based platforms.
  • Familiarity with multiomic data integration, machine learning, statistical genetics, or network biology approaches.
  • Knowledge of cancer biology, neuro-oncology, tumor evolution, or tumor microenvironment biology.
  • Experience using public genomic and proteomic resources such as TCGA, CPTAC, GEO, Synapse, and cBioPortal.
  • Evidence of scientific productivity through peer-reviewed publications.

Responsibilities
