About The Position

Rice University is seeking a highly driven Postdoctoral Researcher to join the recently launched Center for Large Aperture Secure Sensing, Imaging, and Communications (CLASSIC) under the direction of Principal Investigator Edward Knightly. Funded by the Army Research Office, this project leverages Extremely Large-Scale Antenna Arrays and all-spectrum access to realize new capabilities in the nearfield. This position will also have project management responsibilities, including project reporting and coordinating among the center’s seven collaborating institutions and eight industrial partners. The successful candidate will have experience in experimental research in millimeter wave to sub-THz systems. Professor Edward Knightly’s research interests include wireless networks, urban-scale testbeds, clean-slate design, diverse spectrum access, multi-antenna systems, hardware platforms, high-performance protocol design, security, and performance evaluation. This is a one-year, term-limited position supported by grant-funded, soft, and/or restricted funds. Continued employment is contingent upon the availability and renewal of funding.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. or other doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering or related technical fields
  • No experience required
  • Proficiency in millimeter wave to sub-THz systems
  • Familiarity with large-scale antenna arrays

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate project reporting and operations across seven collaborating academic institutions and eight industrial partners to help transition the technology into practical applications
  • Advance foundational ELSAA science to drive technological innovation
  • Engineer advanced sensing techniques tailored for rapid threat detection
  • Construct resilient, high-speed wireless networks for mission-critical operations
  • Analyze wireless jamming vulnerabilities and validate mitigation technologies through rigorous laboratory and field testing.
  • Develop an AI-driven modeling framework that can simulate complex electromagnetic environments in real time
  • Execute laboratory experiments and drone-based field trials to evaluate system performance under realistic conditions
  • Validate high-density antenna arrays scaling from hundreds to tens of thousands of radiating elements
  • Performs all other duties as assigned
