About The Position

Bet Tzedek Legal Services, with over 50 years of providing free legal services to Los Angeles’ most vulnerable residents, is seeking an attorney for an exciting partnership. This role will provide comprehensive, trauma-informed, wrap-around legal services aimed at removing barriers to safe, stable housing for both housed and unhoused individuals. The fellowship is a two-year program, with the possibility for eligible fellows to apply for open attorney positions towards the end of the term. Salary is contingent upon the candidate's bar admittance status at the time of offer. This position is designated as hybrid/remote, with the primary workplace being Bet Tzedek’s offices. Remote work may be permitted at the supervisor's discretion, or the employee may be required to work in other locations based on workload or business needs. Candidates must reside in the Southern California region and be able to commute when necessary.

• Law School graduate (required)
• Ability to work in a fast paced, high-volume environment (required)
• Work well as part of a team, but also self-motivated and able to work independently with appropriate level of supervision (required)

Nice To Haves

• Non-profit legal services experience (strongly preferred)
• Ease with oral and written communication (strongly preferred)
• Experience in fair housing or landlord-tenant law (strongly preferred)

Responsibilities

• Under the supervision of an attorney: file Civil Rights Department complaints, write reasonable accommodation letters for tenants with disabilities, file motions to seal criminal conviction and eviction records, and prevent and appeal terminations from subsidized housing programs.
• Under the supervision of an attorney, litigate landlord-tenant/eviction cases including interview clients, draft affirmative and responsive court forms, pleadings, motions, briefs, and correspondence; engage in discovery practice and assist in settlement negotiations, trial preparation, and court appearances.
• Participate in in-person know-your-rights presentations and outreach events.
• Attend in-person monthly clinics to provide legal services to unhoused and unstably housed individuals.
• Other assignments as deemed appropriate.
