About The Position

The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) is seeking a Postdoctoral Scholar for the Delgado Lab. This role involves independently managing research direction, designing and implementing projects, and contributing to the group's productivity. The scholar will also assist with basic lab maintenance, manage the animal research colony, and supervise junior lab members. A key aspect of this position is driving an independent research project, culminating in manuscript preparation and dissemination of results through conference presentations.

Requirements

• Doctorate degree in chemistry, biology, medicine or other natural, life or health care science directly related to the assigned area of research
• Two years advanced journal level work experience in a clinical or research setting.
• Analysis and interpretation of results from independent projects.
• Corroborating results with literature and independently designing next steps.
• Communicating work with the lab during meetings.
• Experience supporting graduate students, postdocs and all technical laboratory staff regarding guiding data and result interpretation as well as troubleshooting.
• Immediate experience maintaining and managing animal colonies, animal protocol development, institutional biosafety protocol development and maintaining the lab in compliance with all institutional guidelines.
• Experience with live animal survival surgeries and procedures.
• Teaching other lab members procedures and surgeries.
• Experience in histochemical techniques, proteomics, tissue culture and advanced microscopy.
• Experience training and supporting junior members of the lab.
• Experience communicating and disseminating research results from the lab via conferences, publications and presentations.
• Experience and knowledge of institutional resources regarding core facilities.
• Ability to work and supervise independently with excellent multitasking skills.

Responsibilities

• Independently design, execute, troubleshoot and interpret complex experiments using murine models and patient samples, molecular, cellular and computational approaches.
• Coordinate and manage multiple parallel research projects ensuring a timely completion of research milestones.
• Conduct, implement and teach complex survival surgeries and procedures on immunocompromised and immunocompetent mice.
• Perform independent data analysis, including analysis of multispectral immunohistochemical images from mouse and patients, flow cytometry, RNA-sequencing, and proteomics.
• Develop innovative and independent research questions and experimental approaches that complement and advance the objectives of the laboratory.
• Lead collaborations with other investigators throughout the institution and extramural institutions that directly benefit independent project development and the goals of the laboratory.
• Contribute scientific expertise, preliminary data and written content that supports the development of intramural and extramural grant applications submitted by the laboratory.
• Lead the preparation, development, submission and revision of independent peer-reviewed research articles.
• Work with the Division of Laboratory Animal Resources and current laboratory staff to develop novel transgenic mouse strains.
• Ensure compliance with institutional, federal, and regulatory requirements pertaining to animal research, biosafety and responsible conduct of research.
• Provide scientific leadership by managing and mentoring junior personnel in the lab from project development to intellectual support for manuscript and grant preparation.
• Represent the lab’s research at local, national and international meetings delivering oral presentations and poster presentations while competently engaging in research conversations.
• Substantially digest, read and interpret state-of-the-art research articles that directly relate to independent projects, assigned projects and the goals of the lab to bring new techniques, directions, input and perspective to the laboratory and to stay on top of the developing field.
• Work synergistically with laboratory support staff to maintain safe and efficient lab operations through participation in shared responsibilities.
• Transfer skills to junior members of the lab such that all members are trained in specialized techniques in situations where assistance is required to complete tasks.
• Assist lab management and technical staff in basic lab maintenance to keep the lab organized.
• Assist in the maintenance and management of animal research colony and when delegated responsibility by PI or lab manager for animal care, husbandry, and experimental design.
• Directly supervise and act as point of contact for junior lab members such as students, postdocs and junior technicians.
• Drive an independent research project collectively resulting in manuscript preparation and dissemination of results to the field in the form of attending research conferences to present work.
