About The Position

The College of Veterinary Medicine at The Ohio State University is seeking applicants for a Post Doctoral Scholar position. The postdoctoral scholar will work as part of an interdisciplinary research team on projects focused on the interspecies transmission, evolutionary dynamics, and surveillance of infectious diseases (including influenza and coronaviruses). The postdoctoral scholar will be responsible for leading bioinformatics and statistical analyses of research data, participating in biological sample collection and field surveillance activities, and maintaining physical and electronic datasets. Key responsibilities include preparing high-quality peer-reviewed scientific manuscripts, drafting grant proposals, developing IACUC, IBC, and IRB protocols, and communicating research findings via oral presentations at regional and national conferences. The scholar will work collaboratively with scientists, laboratory staff, and external collaborators in all phases of the research process.

Requirements

• PhD in Molecular Biology, Virology, Bioinformatics, Molecular Epidemiology, Evolutionary Biology, or another relevant area.
• Experience in molecular laboratory methodologies, including nucleic acid extraction, quantification, and PCR techniques.
• Proven experience using bioinformatic pipelines to analyze and visualize complex biological/genomic datasets.
• Demonstrated background in grant writing (e.g., NIH, NSF, private foundations).
• Experience managing research ethics & compliance (e.g., IACUC, IRB, or IBC protocols).
• Excellent quantitative, organizational, written, and oral communication skills.
• Ability to meet tight deadlines and work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary laboratory setting.

Nice To Haves

• Experience with next-generation sequencing (NGS) data, microbiome composition analysis, or within-host genetic diversity.
• Knowledge of evolutionary theory, population genetics, or disease ecology to infer epidemic or transmission patterns.
• Experience conducting biological field sampling, survey design, or participatory epidemiology techniques.
• Prior teaching, lecturing, or mentoring experience in higher education or academic research settings.
