•$62,838 - $71,033•Onsite

About The Position

The laboratory of Dr. Rafael Fissore in the Department of Veterinary and Animal Sciences at the University of Massachusetts Amherst is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to join our laboratory to investigate the signaling mechanisms underlying mammalian fertilization, with a particular focus on the ionic channels responsible for calcium store refilling and their role in egg activation. The functions of other divalent cations are within our research scope as well. This position offers an excellent opportunity to contribute to fundamental discoveries in reproductive biology and cellular signaling.

Requirements

  • PhD in Cell Biology, Developmental/Reproductive Biology, Neurobiology, or related fields.
  • Strong background in cellular and molecular biology techniques.
  • Experience with live-cell imaging and calcium imaging methodologies.
  • Demonstrated expertise in at least one of the following: patch-clamp electrophysiology, confocal microscopy, or fluorescence microcopy.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing effectively to a collaborative team environment.
  • Commitment to rigorous, reproducible science and attention to detail.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience studying fertilization, oocyte biology, or reproductive physiology preferred but not essential.
  • Expertise in electrophysiology, particularly whole-cell recordings from oocytes or any cell type.
  • Familiarity with ionic signaling.
  • Experience with genetically modified model organisms (particularly mice).
  • Proficiency in image analysis software.
  • Experience with functional genomics approaches or gene knockdown techniques.
  • Publications demonstrating a strong research track record.

Responsibilities

  • Design and execute cutting-edge experiments using patch-clamp electrophysiology, live-cell calcium imaging, and confocal microscopy.
  • Perform molecular and biochemical analyses including immunofluorescence, western blotting, and gene expression studies.
  • Utilize advanced imaging techniques to visualize and quantify calcium dynamics in gametes and early embryos.
  • Contribute to manuscript preparation and presentation of findings at scientific conferences.
  • Collaborate with team members and contribute to laboratory meetings and journal clubs.
  • Mentor junior researchers and contribute to the training environment.
  • Maintain detailed laboratory records and ensure compliance with all safety and ethical protocols.
  • Work collaboratively and effectively to promote teamwork, equality and inclusiveness.
  • Work in partnership with colleagues within the CNS community and across the campus to support the Dean’s strategic priorities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of the mission and goals of the College of Natural Sciences.

Benefits

  • Access to state-of-the-art equipment, including electrophysiology rigs, Ca2+ imaging and microinjection setups, and core facilities with a variety of imaging modalities and specialized imaging platforms.
  • Mentorship from an experienced research team with strong publication and funding records.
  • A collaborative research environment with access to interdisciplinary resources.
  • Professional development opportunities including grant writing workshops and presentation training.
  • Support for conference travel and continuing education.
  • Potential for independent research projects and co-authorship opportunities.
  • Pathway to career development in academic or industry research.
