About The Position

The Postdoctoral Fellow will work under the supervision of Dr. Jianming Qiu in the KUMC Microbiology Department, participating in research on parvovirus infection, AAV transduction biology, and gene therapy. This role involves collaborating with clinicians, faculty, and research staff across the institution. Postdoctoral scholars at the University of Kansas Medical Center are individuals who have received their terminal degree and are pursuing further training in a postdoctoral appointment. The primary purpose of this time-limited appointment is to provide research and/or scholarly training for an academic or research career. The postdoctoral scholar is expected to engage in a full-time regimen of advanced training and research, work under the supervision of a faculty research mentor, promote publication of findings and preparation of research grants, participate in relevant academic activities, and adhere to the University’s Individual Development Plan policy. Candidates must possess a PhD or equivalent terminal degree, strong English skills, and the ability to write and communicate with a scientific audience. They should be capable of independently planning, multi-tasking, and completing projects. Ideally, the fellow will design and execute experiments, analyze data, write grant applications and manuscripts, and supervise graduate students.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in life science
  • Formal degree in the cited discipline area(s) to ensure foundational knowledge and skill set.

Responsibilities

  • Work with faculty mentors to design and prioritize research projects.
  • Conduct independent research on parvovirus infection and AAV transduction biology and gene delivery into airways, utilizing animals in these studies.
  • Collaborate with other lab researchers on data collection, analyses, and manuscript preparation.
  • Assist in the development and preparation of grant applications and manuscripts.
  • Work effectively as part of the research team and mentor other more junior members.
  • Provide guidance to graduate students under the direction of Dr. Qiu.
  • Complete research projects under the guidance of the faculty mentor.
  • Record and interpret the results of experiments in an (electronic) laboratory notebook.
  • Prepare publication-quality manuscripts (including figures and tables) and publish in peer-reviewed literature.
  • Read literature articles, develop new ideas, and assimilate information into project design/interpretation.
  • Interact regularly with the faculty mentor and laboratory members to discuss experimental design and results interpretation.
  • Present research aims and findings at department seminars and scientific meetings.
  • Write and publish results as first author in abstracts, manuscripts, and posters.
  • Submit fellowship applications, as eligible, to bolster research funding and CV building.
  • Attend and maintain compliance with all orientation and training sessions designated by the University and the Department of Microbiology.
  • Understand and follow all assigned duties.
  • Attend regularly scheduled research team meetings.
