About The Position

The Department of Elections (Department) aims to provide equitable access to voting and election-related services, conducting free, fair, and functional elections for the City and County of San Francisco. Department staff work year-round to ensure every eligible San Franciscan has easy access to safe, barrier-free registration and voting options. The Department also continuously works to improve its elections programs to be more efficient and responsive to voter needs. In preparation for the November 3, 2026, General Election, the Department is seeking applications for seasonal positions of Poll Worker Program Coordinator. Beginning a few months before each election, Poll Worker Program Coordinators work to recruit, train, assign, and support paid volunteers who will serve as poll workers on Election Day. Coordinators play a key role in ensuring 501 polling places are fully staffed, poll workers are properly trained and supported, and Election Day operations run smoothly and effectively. In addition to the range of duties assigned to the 1404 job code, the persons in these positions will have the following essential duties and responsibilities:

Requirements

  • One (1) year of clerical experience including preparing and maintaining a variety of records and/or documents, filing, use of office equipment, public contact and processing of incoming and outgoing mail.
  • Valid California driver’s license and a clean DMV record.

  • Experience with public-facing roles such as outreach, training facilitation, or customer service.
  • High level of computer literacy, particularly proficiency with Excel, Outlook, and databases.
  • Meticulously organized and able to maintain enthusiasm, patience, and a positive demeanor.
  • Strong team work ethic and can-do/will-do attitude, and solid interpersonal and conflict resolution skills.
  • Willingness and flexibility to work extended hours, evenings, weekends, and overtime as required during the election cycle.
  • Basic understanding of San Francisco geography and neighborhood location/demography.
  • Commitment to excellent public service and impartiality.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the recruitment, onboarding, training, assignment, and support of poll workers in preparation for Election Day.
  • Maintain regular communication with poll workers via mail, email and phone.
  • Utilize the Department’s Election Information Management System (EIMS) to process poll worker applications, enroll poll workers in training classes, update records, and track poll worker progress.
  • Maintain Excel spreadsheets and tracking tools to organize poll worker assignments, ensuring all Election Day sites are fully staffed.
  • Process incoming and outgoing mail including opening, sorting, and preparing election-related correspondence.
  • Demonstrate strong communication skills when speaking with volunteers or other members of the public.
  • Driving to and assisting with offsite outreach and poll worker recruitment events.
  • Conduct and assist with poll worker trainings.
  • Assist in the Election Center providing remote support to poll workers on Election Day.
  • Assisting with post-election tasks as needed.
