About The Position

The POLITICO Fellows Program trains early-career journalists in covering politics, policy and power. Fellows in the 2027–28 class receive hands-on newsroom experience, structured training and mentorship from POLITICO reporters and editors over a 12-month term, preparing them to report for influential audiences in politics and policy. Start dates are flexible in 2027. Fellows work from POLITICO’s headquarters in Arlington, Virginia. Upon successful completion of the program, Fellows may be considered for an open position in the POLITICO newsroom.

Requirements

At least two years of paid newsroom or other professional journalism experience.
Strong writing and analytical skills.
Ability to work on a team.
Passion for learning and growing in politics and policy journalism.
Submit a cover letter describing your background, interest in politics or policy-focused journalism, and any policy expertise.
Submit a one-page résumé reflecting at least two years of paid newsroom or other professional journalism experience.
Provide two references, including names, email addresses, phone numbers and relationship to the applicant.
Submit three publicly accessible work samples, such as published news stories, articles, video or audio; paywalled links will not be considered.

Responsibilities

Report and write stories for POLITICO audiences, from fast-turn breaking news to deeper policy explainers.
Rotate through editorial teams covering the White House, Congress, federal agencies and key state capitals.
Investigate policy debates driving decision-making in Washington.
Pitch story ideas and build a network of sources.
Participate in regular training sessions and one-on-one mentorship with POLITICO reporters and editors.
