About The Position

This position involves specialized public relations work focused on the organization and implementation of community-wide special events, public relations, and community information related to the Police Department. The goal is to facilitate the development of public trust and confidence in the City. This role is considered an "Essential Position" for emergency management, requiring 24/7 availability during City of Port St. Lucie emergencies as determined by City Administrators, Emergency Manager, or City Officials. Emergency duties will be assigned as needed.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma required.
  • A minimum of six (6) months of related experience in working with special events or public relations required.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license and maintenance of a clean driving record required.
  • Ability to obtain a valid Florida driver's license within 30 days from date of hire.
  • Knowledge of business English, spelling, and punctuation to prepare documents, presentations, reports, etc.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the public.
  • Ability to operate computer equipment, input, and obtain information.
  • Ability to multi-task by coordinating and managing multiple functions and events simultaneously.
  • Extensive knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite software with intermediate to advanced knowledge in creating Excel Spreadsheets and PowerPoint Presentations.
  • Knowledge of the Department and City's policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Ability to focus on the positive in every situation.

Nice To Haves

Responsibilities

  • Plan, direct, and participate in specific police-sponsored events such as National Night Out and Back to School, ensuring after-action plans are completed.
  • Prepare operational plans for city-sponsored special events and large non-city sponsored police details utilizing PD resources and specialized units.
  • Participate in the city Special Events Technology Advisory Committee (SETAC) meetings.
  • Work with Communications to develop and update Community Program Division brochures and flyers.
  • Schedule, facilitate, and participate in community engagement meetings and presentations with public and private groups.
  • Solicit monetary and material donations for special events and community engagement.
  • Plan, organize, and maintain the Community Programs Division event calendar.
  • Coordinate the rental, scheduling, use, and maintenance of facilities and equipment necessary for each event (e.g., stage, portable restrooms, barricades).
  • Work with staff from various city departments in the development and execution of city-sponsored and detail events.
  • Suggest community engagement programs to meet the changing needs of the community.
  • Build community relationships by ensuring the open exchange of accurate information through community input and partnerships.
  • Maintain inventory and complete purchase orders for giveaways.
  • Work with supervisor during budgeting to ensure an adequate supply for the upcoming year.
  • Complete required training to be designated as a Florida Crime Prevention Practitioner within one year of employment (Basic Crime Prevention, Residential Crime Prevention, Commercial Crime Prevention, Basic/Advanced Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED), and CPTED for Houses of Worship).
  • Ensure membership with Florida Crime Prevention is kept current.
  • Act as a liaison with community and business groups, local civic associations, private security agencies, and statewide associations interested in crime prevention.
  • Identify crime prevention training needs through interviews with citizens and business representatives.
  • Develop and update department presentations to be delivered within the community.
  • Convey information from citizens and organizations to the agency.
  • Conduct residential, commercial, and houses of worship surveys, completing a thorough assessment/report afterwards.
  • Participate in planning and zoning meetings, review blueprints, and make recommendations using Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design practices.
  • Monitor and complete Everbridge alerts pertaining to sprees and hot spots under the stratified police model.
  • Assist the Community Programs Division Lieutenant/Captain in conducting a documented evaluation, at least once every two years, of the effectiveness of crime prevention programs offered to the community.
  • Provide individuals with information on how/where to enroll in the Angel Sense program.
  • Complete a home survey once a client is enrolled in Angel Sense to provide safety suggestions to the caregiver.
  • Maintain the current Angel Sense database and inspect radio receivers housed in the PSS department quarterly to ensure they are in proper working order and change batteries when needed.
  • Work with training to complete a lesson plan for officers on the Angel Sense platform to locate individuals using the radio receiver.
  • Periodically work with Communications/PIO to provide information to the community regarding how the Angel Sense program works.
