About The Position

The Police Sergeant is a uniformed first-line responder and supervisor within the University of Oregon Police Department (UOPD). Under the general direction of a Police Captain, the Sergeant independently directs, supervises, assigns, reviews, and participates in law-enforcement work. Sergeants are distinguished from higher-level classifications by their first-responder responsibilities, while those classifications focus primarily on administrative duties. The position involves regular daily contact with students, faculty, staff, administrators, visitors, and the public while carrying out law-enforcement duties to help provide a safe and secure campus. A Sergeant may be the highest-ranking law-enforcement official on campus and must be prepared to make emergency command decisions without consulting a higher authority. The incumbent may also need to direct the community on University matters that marginally relate to law enforcement or public safety until higher-level authority arrives. Performance is regularly reviewed by the assigned Police Captain, with an annual performance appraisal. This is an essential-services position. The incumbent must respond after hours during emergencies, report for assigned shifts during emergency campus closures, and may be assigned to major campus events outside normal work hours. The role is within a community-oriented, trust-based department whose mission is to foster a safe, secure, and welcoming environment that supports the University’s educational, research, and public-service goals.
