About The Position

The McNeese University Police Department has two (2) vacancies for Police Sergeant. The Police Sergeant is a supervisory law enforcement position and serves as a member of the McNeese University Police Department providing a full range of police services to protect life and property, with an emphasis on law enforcement, crime prevention ensuring safety to the campus population.

Requirements

  • Three years of law enforcement experience.
  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Possession of a current Louisiana driver's license.
  • An applicant who has been convicted of a felony or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified until relief from the disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted.
  • Applicants must have Civil Service test scores for the 2100-Protective Services Exam (PSE) to be considered for this vacancy unless exempted by Civil Service rules or policy.

Nice To Haves

  • Possession of an active Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification may be required.
  • Meet the requirements to obtain a Louisiana POST certification and meet all annual requalification requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises, evaluates performance, and assigns patrol duties to lower-level Police Officers.
  • Plan, prioritize, assign, supervise, and review the work of sworn law enforcement staff involved in traffic and field patrol, preliminary and follow-up investigations, crime prevention, community relations, and related services and activities.
  • Completes all records and reports related to law enforcement activities for the shift, including activity sheets, radio logs, time and attendance reports, daily folder checklist report, accident reports, etc., and provides to Police Lieutenant for review.
  • Conducts roll call and officer, vehicle, and equipment inspections and transmits orders, projects and assignment in line with the direction of a lieutenant or higher ranking officers.
  • Review, prepare, process, and maintain a variety of written reports and records pertaining to assigned activities including daily activity reports including incident reports, required forms, summons, records, and related documents prepared by subordinates to ensure accuracy and timely completion.
  • Coordinate police activities with other units in the department, and/or other University departments or divisions; coordinate functions of the unit with other law enforcement agencies.
  • Participate in shift activities as necessary including enforcing local and state laws; issue citations and makes arrests.
  • Conduct a continuing review of assigned activities to identify problems and develop recommendations for improving services.
