About The Position

Under the direction of the Chief of Police, supervise a detail of Police Officers on an assigned shift or perform specialized duties in the areas of investigations or other assignment; enforce State, County and City laws and ordinances; drive on patrol and assume responsibility at crime scenes; supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned staff.

Requirements

Graduation from high school supplemented by training in police science and five continuous years increasingly responsible experience as a Police Officer.
Valid Washington State driver's license.
Valid commission as a Washington State law enforcement officer.
Valid First Aid and CPR certifications.

Principles, practices and procedures used in police work.

Responsibilities

Supervise and observe the day-to-day activities of Police Officers on assigned shift; provide proper scheduling and work assignments to assure adequate coverage of shift activities.
Assist assigned staff in the analysis and interpretation of crime scene data and make appropriate recommendations; respond to calls of major proportion with assigned unit and assure proper crime scene processing; assume command at crime scenes and make decisions regarding notifications, locating resources and other decisions protecting the lives of citizens and officers; work with other agencies and Departments at crime scenes.
Provide expertise to the Department and others regarding specialized areas of police work; develop and implement programs and procedures to achieve assigned objectives.
Supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned staff including police officers and others as assigned; provide training, direction and assistance to subordinates in areas related to law enforcement and equipment/weapons use; resolve employee complaints and concerns.
Assign and review the work of assigned staff; review daily case reports; monitor assigned cases for progress and disposition; provide supervisor with information and status of major investigations and unit activities.
Drive patrol vehicle in an assigned area, observing for conditions and activities in which there appears to be potential or actual harm to persons or property, disruption of public order, or any other violation of law.
Enforce State, County and City laws and ordinances; assure compliance with departmental policies and orders from superior officers.
Conduct briefing sessions at the start of patrol shifts, and conduct de-briefing sessions at the end of a patrol shift to convey to assigned officers and to gather from them pertinent information such as anticipated law violators, suspects at large, and arrests made.
Communicate with other law enforcement agencies to coordinate efforts and exchange information regarding crimes of mutual interest.
Oversee the activities and operations of the school resource officer program as assigned; contact and follow-up with officers, the school district, school staff, students and citizens to evaluate and work with the program to improve efficiency as needed; visit school sites as appropriate.
Oversee assigned programs and activities including block watch, crime prevention, motel, gambling enforcement, missing persons, fingerprinting and others as assigned.
Prepare a variety of records and reports related to unit activities, equipment, training, work schedules and attendance; review subordinates' reports for completeness and accuracy.
Apply, obtain and serve search warrants and subpoenas according to established procedures.
Utilize and maintain a variety of specialized equipment such as firearms, police vehicles, radios, baton, handcuffs, flares, breath testing equipment, and others according to established procedures; maintain proficiency in driving and the use of firearms; operate a computer as assigned.
Oversee assigned budget; locate, research, apply and monitor grants as assigned.
Remain on call to respond to scenes, questions or major events.
Serve as Chief of Police in the absence of the Chief on a rotating basis or as assigned.
Perform related duties as assigned.
