About The Position

This position is primarily responsible for enforcing all local, state, and federal laws and regulations within the Airport jurisdiction. The Norfolk Airport Authority is a political subdivision of the Commonwealth of Virginia, and its mission is to connect our community with the world by safely, reliably, and efficiently operating Norfolk International Airport. The Airport is the aviation gateway to Coastal Virginia and northeastern North Carolina, serving nearly 4.9 million passengers annually with nonstop service to over 40 cities. Requirements

• High school graduate or equivalent.
• Six months of sworn basic law enforcement experience from a certified Virginia police agency to include satisfactory completion of all field training, required.
• Commonwealth of Virginia DCJS “Basic Law Enforcement” certification.
• Must maintain or be able to achieve the appropriate level of Virginia Crime Information Network (VCIN) certification.
• No violations under VA § 15.2-1707 for decertification of a law-enforcement or jail officer.
• Possess a valid driver’s license and must meet NAA driving record requirements.
• Ability to obtain and maintain eligibility to hold a Security Identification Display Area (SIDA) badge as may be required by assigned job duties and responsibilities.
• Ability to successfully complete a criminal background check and other pre-employment requirements.
• Ability and willingness to work alone and at night and on weekends and holidays.
• Ability to attend and complete 40-hour DCJS in-service training every two years.
• Ability to meet the Commonwealth of Virginia’s criteria for the issuance of a handgun permit.
• Ability to show initiative and judgment in noting and recording irregularities and malfunctions of Authority equipment and facilities.
• Ability to exercise tact and cooperation in relationships with passengers, the general public, and Airport tenants.
• Ability to adhere to all Authority personnel policies and departmental guidelines.
• Remain current and proficient in the operation of all police associated equipment to include firearms, 2- and 4-wheel drive vehicles, command vehicle, computers, portable and mobile radios, handcuffs, batons, and other equipment as required by the department.
• Employees must be able to withstand all aspects associated with long periods of stretching, stooping, reaching, lifting, walking, running, standing and sitting under all weather conditions, twenty-four (24) hours a day.
• Employees must be able to adjust to a varied work schedule and engage in physical confrontation when necessary to subdue violent or demented persons.
• Employees must be able to maintain mandated physical training as prescribed by the Criminal Justice Department, i.e., firearms and defensive tactics.
• Employees must be able to clearly transmit and receive any and all communications via radio, telephone, and "face to face."
• Possess the ability to tolerate extreme weather conditions such as heat, cold, rain, snow, light and darkness.
• All drivers must be at least 21 years of age, licensed for at least 3 years, have the type of license required by their state for the vehicles operated and meet the following driving record standards.
• License is active and NOT suspended.
• Any employee or applicant who has been licensed in their state for less than 3 years must provide a copy of their previous driving record to Human Resources.
• An employee or applicant may have a North Carolina or Virginia driver’s license as long as they reside in that state.
• An “unacceptable" DMV driving record includes the following violations during the most recent 3-year period: Committing a Felony with a Motor Vehicle, DWI/DUI, Drug Offense, Eluding a Police Officer, Foreign citizens with no historical driving record available to us, Hit Run / Leaving the Scene of an accident, Lending an Operator’s License or Registration to Another, Open Container Violation, Passing a Stopped School Bus, Racing or Speed Contest Violation, Reckless Driving, Speeding 25 mph, or more, above speed limit, Suspended License History – Drivers who have had 3 or more license suspensions as a result of moving violations, Temporary Operator's Permit, Two or more at fault accident convictions, Vehicle Manslaughter/Homicide, Three or more moving violations within the past 12 months. Note: Texting or cell phone violations are considered moving violations because they increase the chance of being in an accident.

Nice To Haves

• Specialized skills such as Bicycle Patrol, SWAT, Crime Prevention, Rifle Qualified, Crisis Intervention Training, Crisis Negotiation Training etc., preferred.
• Investigative experience, to include misdemeanor, felony and traffic cases, preferred.
• Virginia Department of Criminal Justice certified General Instructor, preferred.
• Virginia Department of Criminal Justice certified Specialty Instructor, preferred.
• Federal Emergency Management courses ICS 100, ICS 200, ISC 700, preferred.

Responsibilities

• Assist the airlines and other Airport tenants in security and police matters as well as channeling requests to proper authorities.
• Be familiar with all the rules and regulations of Norfolk International Airport as well as applicable local, state and federal laws.
• Assist other law enforcement agencies in the performance of their duties when it involves the Airport premises and/or jurisdiction.
• Perform such first aid as required and assist medical personnel when the need arises on Airport premises.
• Assist Airport patrons in cases of emergency and distress.
• Investigate disturbances, losses by theft, and make arrests when necessary.
• Issue traffic citations to those patrons who violate Airport parking regulations and Virginia motor vehicle laws.
• Investigate accidents, confine offenders, and turn them over to the proper authorities.
• Check all parking lots regularly.
• Responsible for the security of all Norfolk Airport Authority facilities.
• Respond to emergency calls for police assistance and unusual occurrences that may arise on Airport premises.
• Report unauthorized solicitation to the Airport Authority administration.
• Answer calls from various departments within the Airport Authority with courtesy and a cooperative attitude.
• Administer and adhere to all Authority policies and guidelines.
• Perform all other duties as assigned and directed.

Benefits

• Operates on the “Platoon System”, 12-hour shift, with rotating days off, alternating between days and nights every twenty-eight (28) days around the clock.
• Standard shift hours are 0600 – 1800 hours and 1800 – 0600 hours.
• Must be able to adjust shifts with little to no advanced notice in case of an event or incident requiring additional sworn personnel.
