About The Position

Under general supervision, attends and participates in a comprehensive training program at a Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) certified basic police academy and maintains academic standards required. Learns, trains, and performs all related learning and testing activities related to the technical knowledge, skills, and physical abilities required to perform in the capacity of a sworn police officer.

Requirements

  • Principles and practices of PC’s and related software.
  • Operation of standard office equipment.
  • Correct use of oral and written English, spelling punctuation and composition.
  • Public speaking and public contact techniques.
  • Practices and techniques of inventory and record keeping; data collection, statistical record keeping methods and report writing techniques, police records and information resources.
  • Law enforcement terminology and concepts.
  • Techniques for dealing with people of all socioeconomic levels under normal, hostile, and emergency situations.
  • Safe driving principles and practices.
  • Standard safety practices necessary in the area of law enforcement work.
  • Remaining calm and taking appropriate action in tense situations.
  • Reading, interpreting and applying procedures and policies.
  • Preparing clear and concise reports.
  • Operate a PC and related software.
  • Maintain effective working relationships.
  • Pass an initial comprehensive P.O.S.T. background investigation.
  • Pass an initial medical and psychological P.O.S.T. examination.
  • Pass an oral interview.
  • Pass range qualification.
  • Communicate in oral and written English.
  • Read, understand, interpret, explain, and apply applicable laws, ordinances, policies, and regulations.
  • Maintain cooperative relationships with representatives of other agencies, community residents and visitors, and other City employees.
  • Maintain a valid First Aid/CPR Certificate.
  • Physically be present at the worksite to ensure proper staffing levels.
  • Be consistent in reporting on time and working full workdays and workweeks to include shift work, weekends, evening and holiday hours as assigned.
  • Able to obtain a valid Certificate of Graduation from a P.O.S.T. Police Academy within six months of hire.
  • Possess a Title 22 First Aid/CPR Certificate or be able to obtain by the end of the Police Academy.
  • Maintain a valid California Driver License with a driving record acceptable to the City.
  • Failure to complete P.O.S.T. Police Academy and all eligibility requirements for promotion to Police Officer within six months of commencing the Academy Program will be grounds for termination.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate’s Degree with emphasis in criminology, law enforcement/administration of justice, political science, social or behavioral science or a related field, preferred.
  • One (1) to two (2) years of experience in security, intelligence, investigations or law enforcement in the armed forces, general clerical or technical experience in a law enforcement setting, or active participation in a law enforcement-oriented cadet program, preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Attends, participates, and successfully completes a California P.O.S.T. approved basic police academy.
  • Complies with dress code and appearance standards of P.O.S.T. Academy.
  • Learns, applies knowledge, and successfully completes academic assignments and tests of P.O.S.T. Academy as directed and required.
  • Participates and successfully completes physical fitness activities of P.O.S.T. Academy and of the Delano Police Department.
  • Participates in the firearms course resulting in achieving a qualifying score for firearms qualification under California Penal Code Section 832 both at the P.O.S.T. Academy and at the Delano Police Department.
  • Follows prescribed safety policies, practices, and procedures.
  • Ensures readiness to participate in all assigned daily activities with required gear and supplies.
  • Interacts and communicates with academy staff, students, and City personnel.
  • Participates in weaponless self-defense training.
  • May be required to operate an assigned motor vehicle to and from the P.O.S.T. academy, and operates a motor vehicle during defensive drivers training.
  • Successfully receives OC Spray and/or a Taser certification.
  • Keeps Delano Police Department Supervisor informed of any absences, accidents, incidents, or injuries and provides documentation when required.
  • Performs a variety of other duties as assigned.
