Police Officer Recruit

City of Sacramento•Sacramento, CA

About The Position

Under close supervision, Police Officer Recruits participate in a basic law enforcement training program at the Sacramento Police Academy. They learn police procedures, law enforcement techniques, first aid, and develop the physical and emotional skills needed to complete the academy. Recruits may also perform non-sworn, non-hazardous duties in support of police operations. This is a non-career developmental classification intended to recruit and train candidates for Police Officer or Community Service Officer II roles in the Sacramento Police Department. Recruits complete a formal, comprehensive California P.O.S.T. Basic Police Academy program and are expected to demonstrate satisfactory physical agility and maintain ongoing physical training. After satisfactory academy graduation, recruits who meet the Police Officer classification requirements advance to Police Officer. Advancement to Police Officer or Community Service Officer II depends on satisfactory performance. Failure to graduate or make satisfactory progress may result in termination. Employees generally may not remain in the Recruit classification for more than one year from hire, except when invited to attend an additional academy after an unsuccessful attempt. The role is immediately supervised by higher-level sworn or civilian personnel. Work may include assisting with routine investigations, non-injury reports, calls involving fire alarms, street hazards or found property, traffic and non-violent crowd control, and transporting citizens, personnel, or equipment as directed. Applicants must pass the Police Officer Recruit examination and, if considered for appointment, the required background investigation and other selection steps.
