About The Position

This position is represented by the Anchorage Police Department Employees Association (APDEA) and is subject to the provisions of the current agreement between the Municipality of Anchorage and the Union. The Police Clerk is responsible for extensive contact with the public, both in person and over the phone. They maintain working knowledge of community, municipal, and internal resources and route citizens appropriately. The role involves taking reports of crime over the phone and composing formal department police reports, typing and composing routine correspondence, various reports, and memorandums. Extensive data entry is required, including researching and entering data from police reports and citations into various computer systems. The position also involves coordinating with internal personnel and external agencies under time constraints to process arrests and charging documents, performing cashiering functions, processing all traffic citations, and processing monetary entries for receipt of all monies for various types of permits, fees, and reports. Court testimony may be required. Police Clerks with five (5) years of position seniority will be re-classed to a Senior Police Clerk. This specific role reports to the Warrants Unit Sergeant and performs data entry regarding misdemeanor warrants, court-issued subpoenas, summonses, and stalking/protective orders. It involves conducting validation/audit processes through APSIN, communicating extensively with APD Officers, the Alaska Court System, the Alaska District Attorney’s Office, and the Municipal Prosecutor’s Office, and conducting research to help Officers locate individuals in the community to serve court-issued orders.

Requirements

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • Two (2) years of clerical office experience.
  • Satisfactory national criminal background investigation.
  • Satisfactory financial review at time of hire.
  • Obtain Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN) / National Crime Information Center (NCIC) certification within thirty (30) days of hire.
  • Satisfactory Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) background check at time of hire.
  • Meet Alaska Police Standards Council (APSC) and Anchorage Police Department standards regarding misdemeanor and/or felony convictions, traffic violations, and use of controlled substances.
  • Pass a typing test at a net speed of 35 WPM at time of hire.
  • Possess a valid State of Alaska Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record at time of hire.
  • Applicants must be legally authorized to work and accept employment in the United States.
  • Applicants must have completed any probationary period for their current position to be selected.

Nice To Haves

  • Preference will be given to Anchorage Police Department (APD) employees.
  • Current APD Employees who have previously passed the Nelson Denny Reading and Comprehension Exam are exempt from re-testing.
