About The Position

The Police Cadet Program is a civilian position exempt from Civil Service status, serving as an entry-level role within the Knoxville Police Department. This program is designed for individuals who are at least eighteen years old but have not yet reached their 21st birthday. Cadets work a minimum of thirty (30) to forty (40) hours per week. Upon reaching twenty-one (21) years of age, a Cadet may be certified as a Police Officer if they have served a minimum of one (1) year as a Cadet/Apprentice, passed the physical performance test, met minimum training requirements (including POST), maintained all minimum requirements, and been certified by the Civil Service Merit Board. After becoming a Police Officer, a one-year probationary period begins. The program length is a minimum of one year to a maximum of five years. An optional college education component requires completion of 12 semester hours or 18 quarter hours per year with a minimum grade of “C”.

Requirements

  • Must be eighteen (18) years of age.
  • Must not have reached their 21st birthday.
  • High School graduate or equivalency prior to hire.
  • Must not have any background disqualifiers.
  • Required to possess or be able to obtain a valid Tennessee Driver’s License.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen, or a Permanent Legal Resident of the U.S. and applies for or obtains U.S. Citizenship within six years of hiring.
  • Attach a copy of valid birth certificate to the application.
  • Attach a copy of High School Diploma or GED to the application prior to hire.

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of 12 semester hours or 18 quarter hours per year with a minimum grade of “C” (2.00 on a 4.00 scale) for the optional college education program.

Responsibilities

  • Serve a minimum of one (1) year as a Cadet/Apprentice with the Knoxville Police Department (unless waived).
  • Take and pass the physical performance test for Police Officer.
  • Meet the minimum training requirements of the Knoxville Police Department and Tennessee Peace Officer Standards and Training.
  • Meet and maintain all minimum requirements for certification as a Police Officer.
  • Complete optional college education requirements if chosen.
