About The Position

The City of Angleton Police Department is launching a Police Cadet Sponsorship Program to offer qualified candidates a path to a law enforcement career. This program allows individuals to pursue law enforcement while gaining experience and training. The program is guided by specific requirements and guidelines. Applicants must be authorized to work in the USA without sponsorship. The program is designed for individuals pursuing a career as a Texas peace officer who are not yet licensed. The primary responsibility is to successfully attend, participate in, and graduate from a Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE)-approved Basic Peace Officer Academy. This is the first step toward becoming a Police Officer with the Angleton Police Department, requiring dedication, professionalism, academic performance, physical fitness, discipline, and personal conduct.

Requirements

• Must be authorized to work in the USA without sponsorship.
• Successfully complete a Physical Agility Test (1.5-Mile Run within 17 minutes and 15 seconds, 25 Push-Ups within 60 seconds, 30 Sit-Ups within 60 seconds).
• Successfully complete a Vocabulary and Literacy Test.
• Complete the application and include a Letter of Interest and a Current Resume.
• Meet the minimum requirements established by the Angleton Police Department and applicable TCOLE requirements for enrollment in a Basic Peace Officer Academy.
• Be at least 21 years of age or meet all applicable requirements for academy enrollment.
• Possess a high school diploma or GED.
• Possess a valid driver’s license or be eligible to obtain one.
• Be legally authorized to work in the United States; sponsorship is not available.
• Meet applicable TCOLE eligibility requirements.
• Successfully complete the Angleton Police Department hiring and selection process.
• Successfully pass all required background investigations and screening processes.
• Meet the physical and mental requirements established by the department and applicable academy.
• Demonstrate good moral character, integrity, and judgment.
• Be driven, disciplined, accountable, physically capable, academically motivated, professional, honest, dependable, community-minded, and willing to learn.
• Be prepared to dedicate the time, effort, and personal commitment necessary to graduate from the academy and become a licensed Texas peace officer.

Responsibilities

• Attend, participate in, and graduate from a Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE)-approved Basic Peace Officer Academy.
• Successfully complete all academy requirements and obtain a Texas Peace Officer License through TCOLE.
• Attend all required academy classes and training.
• Maintain satisfactory academic performance.
• Successfully complete all required written examinations.
• Successfully complete required physical training and skills testing.
• Successfully complete firearms training and qualification requirements.
• Successfully complete defensive tactics training.
• Successfully complete driving and emergency vehicle operations training.
• Successfully complete practical skills examinations.
• Maintain satisfactory attendance and punctuality.
• Follow all academy rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
• Follow all lawful instructions from academy instructors and the Angleton Police Department personnel.
• Maintain the professional standards expected of a future Angleton Police Officer.
• Successfully graduate from the academy.
• Successfully obtain the required TCOLE peace officer license.
• Upon successful completion of the academy and licensing requirements, successfully complete the Angleton Police Department’s required field training and evaluation process.
• Report to the academy on time and be prepared for training.
• Maintain excellent attendance and punctuality.
• Participate fully in all classroom, physical, practical, and skills-based training.
• Complete all assigned homework, study requirements, and examinations.
• Notify appropriate department personnel of any issue that may affect academy attendance or performance.
• Maintain the academic standards established by the academy and TCOLE.
• Demonstrate the ability to learn and apply Texas law and law-enforcement concepts.
• Demonstrate proficiency in subjects including, but not limited to: Texas Penal Code, Texas Code of Criminal Procedure, Texas Transportation Code, Texas Health and Safety Code, Criminal investigations, Arrest procedures, Search and seizure, Use of force, Constitutional law, Report writing, Ethics, De-escalation, Crisis intervention, Communications, Patrol procedures.
• Maintain the physical conditioning necessary to participate successfully in academy training.
• Complete required practical skills, which may include: Physical readiness training, Defensive tactics, Firearms training, Emergency vehicle operations, Arrest and control techniques, Handcuffing and restraint procedures, Scenario-based training, First aid and emergency response, Other TCOLE-required proficiency areas.
• Demonstrate honesty and integrity.
• Maintain a professional appearance.
• Demonstrate maturity and sound judgment.
• Accept constructive criticism and instruction.
• Demonstrate accountability.
• Maintain respectful relationships with instructors, department personnel, fellow cadets, and members of the public.
• Follow departmental and academy policies.
• Maintain confidentiality.
• Avoid conduct that could negatively affect the reputation of the Angleton Police Department.
• Conduct themselves in a manner consistent with the standards expected of a future police officer.
• Remain employed with the Angleton Police Department for 36 months following the successful completion of Field Training.

Benefits

• Compensation for a cadet will be $20.00 per hour.
• Additional compensation and benefits are available upon becoming an officer in training with the City of Angleton Police Department and in accordance with City of Angleton policies.
