About The Position

This position is for a Part-Time Faculty Pool for the Police Academy Instructor role at Fresno City College. The role involves instructing cadets in the Regular Basic Course (RBC) and potentially specialty modules. The instructor will be responsible for coordinating instruction, managing the training system, and ensuring cadets meet course demands. A key aspect of the role is to foster an inclusive learning environment and support students from diverse backgrounds.

Requirements

  • Evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice within the classroom.
  • Associate degree and six (6) years of full-time equivalent professional experience; OR Bachelor’s degree and two (2) years of full-time equivalent professional experience; OR A valid California Community College Credential; OR The equivalent education and/or experience (petition for equivalency required if degrees do not match exactly).
  • General knowledge of principles and practices of law enforcement.
  • General knowledge of standard methods and practices of uniformed police work.
  • General knowledge of principles of training and formal instruction.
  • Basic understanding of adult learning principles and concepts.
  • Basic understanding of time management techniques.
  • Ability to maintain a positive attitude.
  • Ability to lead by example.
  • Ability to motivate cadets.

  • Knowledge of current assessment methods and materials.
  • Knowledge of the community college and its mission and goals.

Nice To Haves

  • Academy Instructor Certification Course (AICC) for Basic Academy required within twelve (12) months of appointment as a Regular Basic Course (RBC) instructional staff.
  • Specialty modules like range master, emergency vehicle operator course (EVOC), etc. require additional certifications within twelve (12) months of appointment as a Regular Basic Course (RBC) instructional staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate the instruction and management of the Regular Basic Course instructional system.
  • Experience and skill incorporating elements of diversity, equity, and inclusion into all areas of responsibility.
  • Recent experience working with African American, Asian/Pacific Islander, Latinx, Native American, and other racially minoritized students in the classroom and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups in higher education shape patterns of participation and outcomes.
  • Willingness to examine and remediate one’s instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized students.
  • Related work and professional experience.
  • Experience working with students of various cultural, gender, age, socioeconomic, and ethnic backgrounds, students with disabilities.
  • Experience working with traditionally underrepresented student populations, such as students of color and foster youth, and the ability to support students across sociocultural and socioeconomic diversities.
  • Experience in facilitating multicultural and cross-cultural communication with sensitivity to and an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, gender, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
  • Experience with, and sensitivity to, under-prepared and high-need students at the community college.
  • Possesses recruitment and mentor skills.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the instruction and management of the Regular Basic Course instructional system.
