About The Position

The Point of Care Technical Consultant is responsible for technical and scientific oversight for point of care testing and responsible for Point of Care Testing (POCT) functions in non-laboratory areas. Responsible for assessing, developing, planning, coordinating, and documenting all processes, education, and ongoing functionality for Point of Care Testing (POCT). Responsible for verifying Quality Control results and documentation to meet all regulatory requirements. Takes an active role in the selection process for new POCT instruments and coordinates implementation of instrumentation. Must have a thorough knowledge of the instrument, operating procedures, and instrument specific software. The Technical Consultant must be available to the laboratory as needed for telephone, electronic and on-site consultation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution, with at least two years of training and/or experience in non-waived testing.
  • For moderate complexity blood gas testing only, qualify with a bachelor’s degree of higher as listed above.
  • Completion of clinical internship.
  • MLS/MT (OR MLT) certified.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution, with at least two years of training and/or experience in non-waived testing.
  • Current state driver’s license, current proof of insurance, a reliable vehicle and maintain a driving record according to McLaren corporation standards.

Responsibilities

  • Acts as a liaison between laboratory and non-laboratory units and physicians regarding training, certification and ongoing performance of POCT operators.
  • Collaborates with the laboratory team, nursing and physician staff to facilitate positive patient outcomes.
  • Monitors various reports such as pending logs, critical value reports, and correction reports.
  • Verifies that manually reported results are accurate as reviewed in the individual software and that questionable testing (i.e. testing with no orders, incorrect Pt. ID numbers, or questionable results) are appropriate.
  • Maintains specific software for each POC test type, including monitoring to ensure full connectivity and troubleshooting connectivity problems. Validates software revisions as needed.
  • Documents and/or perform quality control, troubleshooting, calibration and maintenance checks as outlined for each test type, as necessary. Conducts verification tests on new products, performing comparison studies between new instruments, statistical analysis and special projects.
