About The Position

The State of Connecticut Technical Education and Career System (CTECS) is hiring for a Plumbing and Heating Instructor to join the professional education team at Platt Technical High School in Milford, CT. This role involves teaching plumbing and heating technologies, developing lesson plans, fostering student learning and engagement, providing social-emotional support, tutoring, academic counseling, and maintaining classroom records. Instructors will collaborate with colleagues, meet with business and industry partners to stay current with trade practices and technology, and provide feedback on curriculum. The position requires educating students on safety procedures aligned with current NFPA and Plumbing and Heating-Related ICC codes adopted in Connecticut. Instructors will also work on various sites, including off-campus production sites like construction sites (residential, commercial, and industrial) and on-campus production sites, to connect students with employment and work-based learning opportunities. This role may involve lifting light to medium weights and exposure to risks from typical construction site environments. Possible career pathways include Department Head, Consulting, or Administration.

Requirements

• An active CT teaching certificate as a 090 Occupational Subject, Vocational Technical Schools.
• A P-1 Plumbing license issued by the State of Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection is required at time of application.
• 8 years of relevant, varied, hands on experience in the trade or technical field, with apprentice training or formal training (specific and affiliated union program training, college or technical institutes) can count up to five years. Formal training credit should be applied for coursework directly associated with HVAC. Transcript review should determine the percentage of study time devoted to trade and be applied proportionately. Two thousand (2,000) hours of apprentice training equals one year based on a letter of completion from the Connecticut Department of Labor (CT-DOL OAT).
• Experience must encompass all areas specified in the program description in order to effectively teach the approved Plumbing and Heating curriculum.

Nice To Haves

• S-7 Limited Heating Contractors license issued by the State of Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection within two (2) years of service.
• CDL with proper endorsements to transport students - within 18 months of employment.
• OSHA Train-the-Trainer (CFR 1926) certification within two years of employment.

Responsibilities

• Instruct students in the discipline of Plumbing and Heating technologies.
• Develop and design lesson and/or unit plans to foster student learning.
• Stimulate class discussions utilizing a variety of pedagogical methods, including differentiated instruction and fostering relationship building.
• Provide social emotional support in the learning process and ensure student engagement.
• Provide tutoring and academic counseling to students.
• Maintain classroom records and assess student coursework.
• Collaborate and support colleagues regarding research interests and co-curricular activities.
• Attend periodic building-level and districtwide meetings and professional development.
• Meet with business and industry partners to maintain currency in the trade and stay apprised of the newest technology.
• Provide feedback to district curriculum teams on modern industry practices to adjust curricula when needed.
• Educate students on proper safety procedures and competencies aligned to current and relevant NFPA and Plumbing and Heating-Related ICC body of Codes adopted in Connecticut.
• Incorporate a variety of teaching methods that are practical and include hands-on instruction.
• Model and demonstrate safe work practices prior to facilitation of learning.
• Use and properly demonstrate the use of ladder/scaffold, hand and power tools used in the Plumbing and Heating trade.
• Teach in a variety of settings for both theoretical and psychomotor/hands-on training, including plumbing and heating lab, theory room, off-campus production sites, and on-campus production sites.
• Work on a variety of sites to compliment real-world applications, including working with established businesses and construction sites, to connect students with employment opportunities and resources.
