About The Position

This position performs skilled work in the maintenance and repair of water treatment plants, raw water intake pump stations, potable water pump stations, elevated and ground storage tanks, lakes, dams, the chlorine dioxide disinfection facility, and a scalping station. Responsibilities include troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining mechanical and electrical equipment to ensure safe, efficient water production operations. The role involves performing general maintenance tasks such as carpentry, electrical wiring, plumbing, and painting. It also includes lubricating and performing preventive maintenance on motors and equipment, operating a city vehicle for daily travel to various water facilities, and maintaining safe work sites. Basic computer operations, mowing, and grounds maintenance are also part of the duties. The role requires the use of hand tools, specialized tools, welding equipment, and electrical test instruments. Specific duties for higher levels include maintaining clarifiers, chlorinators, and chlorine dioxide generators, repairing pumps, motors, valves, and chemical feed systems, performing minor electrical troubleshooting, and adding/removing columns on vertical turbine pumps. The highest level involves disassembling/reassembling pumps, maintaining Risk Management records for chlorine systems, training staff, providing advanced troubleshooting, and working on electrical systems without supervision.

  • The raw water and treated water distribution system in relation to treatment plants, pump stations, elevated storage tanks, and water lines (Mechanic III).
  • Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) (Mechanic III).
  • Work on electrical systems without supervision (Mechanic III).
  • Read blueprints, electrical ladder drawings, schematics, and diagrams (Mechanic III).
  • One (1) year of general maintenance experience is preferred (Mechanic I).
  • A high school diploma or GED is required (Mechanic I).
  • A valid current Texas driver’s license, the ability to obtain one within ninety (90) days of employment, or a military waiver is required (Mechanic I).
  • Possession of a Class D Water License from the State of Texas within six (6) months of employment is required (Mechanic I).
  • Possession of a Class C Water License from the State of Texas within two (2) years of employment is required (Mechanic I).
  • Two (2) years of relevant experience in maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment, such as pumps and motors, at a level equivalent to Plant & Equipment Mechanic I, is required (Mechanic II).
  • Previous mechanical training is required (Mechanic II).
  • Five (5) years of relevant experience in maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment, such as pumps and motors, including duties performed at the Plant & Equipment Mechanic II level, is required (Mechanic III).
  • Advanced mechanical skills obtained through formal education, vocational programs, or substantial hands-on experience are required (Mechanic III).
  • A Class B Water License from the State of Texas within five (5) years of employment is required (Mechanic III).
  • Rotating on-call schedule.
  • Exposure to extreme weather, chemicals, confined spaces, and electrical hazards.
  • Ability to climb elevated tanks and work at heights.
  • Ability to respond to emergencies within 30 minutes when on call.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain clarifiers, chlorinators, chlorine dioxide generators, and related equipment (Mechanic II).
  • Repair, rebuild, or replace pumps, motors, valves, solenoids, and chemical feed systems (Mechanic II).
  • Perform minor electrical troubleshooting and repairs (Mechanic II).
  • Add/remove columns on vertical turbine pumps for optimal water quality (Mechanic II).
  • Disassemble/reassemble pumps; replace bearings, seals, impellers (Mechanic III).
  • Maintain Risk Management records for chlorine systems in accordance with TCEQ regulations (Mechanic III).
  • Train, coach, and mentor assigned staff (Mechanic III).
  • Provide advanced troubleshooting (Mechanic III).
  • Lead a crew to raise and lower vertical turbine pumps at Lake Ivie (Mechanic III).
  • Perform other job-related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
